Bateman: A fresh start

Post by josie andrews »

John Bateman reflects on his first season back in Cherry and White and the season ahead.

Second rower also looks ahead to Wigan’s 150th year celebrations.

Bateman: “There’ll be a lot of new things put in place and we’re just looking ahead to getting into it.”

John Bateman is looking ahead to the 2022 Season as a ‘fresh start’ as the Warriors head into their 150th year.

Bateman returned to Wigan ahead of the 2021 Season after a two-year spell in the NRL with Canberra Raiders, though he admits it wasn’t quite the returning season he would have hoped for: “As an overall what happened this season, as a team we didn’t achieve what we wanted to do.

“We had a few hiccups this year, players being injured or out, so it wasn’t the best year for us as a Club. It is one of those years though and you have to live and learn from it, take the good things and the bad things from it and move on.”

Speaking on his return to the Cherry and Whites he added: “It was always good to come back to the Club, that’s what I wanted to do and it was good to be back playing in a Wigan shirt in front of the fans again.”

Wigan recently announced their new Coaching Team for 2022 and beyond, a group which Bateman is keen to get started with: “The Coaching Team can offer new ideas, they’re young people who are ambitious and looking at the team as well it’s a pretty young team so it should be a good year and we’re really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to getting back in even though we’ve only just finished.

“There’ll be a lot of new things put in place and we’re just looking ahead to getting into it.”

The Warriors also look ahead to 2022 in anticipation as they celebrate their 150th year: “To be playing in the 150th year for the Club is massive, to celebrate what the Club has done and how much they have achieved. It’s a huge season for the Club and for us as players representing the Club. It’s massive, we’ve got new Coaching Staff, so it’s a fresh start for everyone and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
