Wigan Warriors disability teams came together on Friday evening for their end of season awards to celebrate their achievements in 2021.
LDRL
Warrior of the Year – Tom Mitson
Tom has grown from a shy and quiet person since joining the Warriors and has developed his skills of rugby and communication in the past season. Tom is always there for his teammates on the field and tries his best in all sessions both training and matches. He picks up this award for being a true warrior, always welcoming when new players arrive and always on hand to help out.
Most improved – Ben Lake
Before joining Wigan in 2021, Ben hadn’t played rugby before. His work ethic in training has seen him develop many skills to ensure he makes an impact within the team and has earned him the accolade of most improved. Having integrated into the team he is now in every tackle, taking in drives as well as supporting his teammates in every way.
Players’ Player of the Year – Paul Lyon
As voted by his fellow players, Paul always trains hard and plays to the best of his ability in matches. He is always supportive of his teammates, on and off the field, which they have repaid with this award.
Player of the Year – Will Hand
Player of the Year this season, Will joined the team in 2021 and has developed rugby and leadership skills. Will is the organiser of the team to ensure everyone is involved and plays their part within the team. He also gives direction to the team to ensure they play the best we can.
PDRL
Warrior of the Year – Steve Mort
Steve has always been there at training and putting his body on the line during matches. He also encourages his teammates to be the best they can be. Steve is an inspiration to us all with his resilience both as a person and player and motivates us all to be the best we can be, which sees him as 2021 Warrior of the Year.
Most improved player – Chris Cheshire & Danny Potter
Chris’ confidence has really proved invaluable in 2021. Chris’ rugby skills have developed and he has even stepped forward to be the Assistant coach for the LDRL team.
Danny’s confidence in each match has improved in his ability to play rugby. Quiet in training, he is a different person on the pitch come game day and has made many improvements this year.
Players’ Player of the Year – Craig Davies
Craig has adapted quickly to a new position and expectations put on him by the coaches. He is vocal on the pitch to ensure the team have direction and always motivates his teammates even when he is unable to train or play and this has earned him Players’ Player of the Year.
Player of the Year – Aaron Vose
Aaron has been a vital player this season both in attack and defence. In attack, he is always dangerous with his speed, agility and intuition. He always puts in 100% in training and pushes himself to ensure he is challenging himself, especially with his fitness.

Disability Awards Evening
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
