Jai Field fitness update as Wigan Warriors pre-season return date confirmed

Post by josie andrews »

The Warriors are gearing up to begin life under Matty Peet

Jai Field has delivered on his own personal promise to be fit and raring to go for the start of Wigan's pre-season training, new head coach Matty Peet has revealed.

The Australian, whose first season at the DW Stadium was hampered by a number of serious injuries, will report to Robin Park on Monday for the opening day of the Warriors' 2022 pre-season campaign fully fit and raring to go, Peet admitted.

It is a major boost not only for Wigan but for Field as well, who is likely to play a pivotal role for the Warriors next season in the absence of star half-back Jackson Hastings, who has returned to the NRL with Wests Tigers.

"He was really keen to make sure he was fit and good to go from day one of pre-season, so that's great to see," Peet told Rugby League Live.

He was talking in a really determined manner about hitting the ground running from the very start and making a huge impact - and I want them all to be thinking like that. At a club like this, I'm not expecting that I'll need to motivate people to want to have a good pre-season after the way we finished last year."

Field will also be joined on Monday by new signing Kaide Ellis, who arrives in the country this week and will report to pre-season training after joining Wigan on a two-year deal from NRL side St George.

Fellow new recruit Patrick Mago will link up with the club a fortnight later, owing to his later involvement in the Australian domestic season with South Sydney.

We've got almost everyone ready to go," Peet said, after confirming the club's other new signings to date, Iain Thornley and Abbas Miski, will also be ready on day one.

Bevan French is still recovering from injury, but Peet insisted he is in safe hands. "We're as hands-on as we can be with Bevan," Peet said. "We're having daily Zoom chats with him and we're being supported by some experts over there who we trust.

"It's important to make sure we support him as well as he can and when he gets here he will be fit and raring to go, we've no doubt about that."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Doesn’t sound promising that Bevan will be back for pre season or very soon for that matter 🤨

With Bevan it almost feels one of 2 things are happening

1) He's not coming back because he doesn't want to, be that personal or professional reasons

2) The injury is worse than anyone's let on ala Amos roberts that may force him to finish

This is why we haven't moved to sign a half, If French doesn't return, we sign Jacob Miller. If French does return then I haven't got a clue who we would turn to instead.

Im guessing in that scenario Field would be used as a half? and if French doesnt return as a FB. They made old man tommy go around again so in theory they would argue they have half covered from a body point of view.

This is why people are so critical of wigans recruitment we have signed Field but where he plays will be largely dictated by who stays and leaves instead of having people in positions they are experts in

French returning shouldn't effect the search for a half as Field is not a fullback.

The only thing the club should look at to replace French is a long term fullback option as Zak is obviously going sooner rather than later.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

We don't have a quota spot available, (as far as I'm aware) that's why French effects the half back search.

Surely this would be covered if Tommy retired which has been banded about.

Field/Smith/Tommy/new half seems a bit to much.

This isn't me doubting anything I'm staying out of that mudhole, just doesn't make logical sense to me to carry 4 halves.
