Wigan Borough urged to be up for the cup

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions will have the backing of the borough in their respective cup finals this weekend, the Leader of Wigan Council has said.

Warriors face Huddersfield Giants while Centurions play Featherstone Rovers in the RFL 1895 Cup final, which is serving as a curtain raiser for the Challenge Cup.

Both finals are taking place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, on Saturday.

Councillor David Molyneux said: "I hope the entire borough gets behind Matt Peet’s Warriors side and joins everyone at Wigan Council in hoping the club claims another Challenge Cup title.

"We will of course also be cheering on Adrian Lam’s Centurions as the opportunity to bring two trophies back to Wigan Borough does not come around too often.

"The borough’s sporting teams set a high bar in 2013, but with Wigan Athletic having already claimed the League One title and promotion, and the UEFA Women’s Euros and Rugby

League World Cup on the horizon, 2022 also has the potential to be a momentous one."

Plans to recognise Wigan Athletic’s remarkable 2021/22 season were revealed by Wigan Council earlier this month.

Chairman Talal Al Hammad will be made an ‘honorary Wiganer’ and the club’s representatives will also be invited to a civic reception in the coming months at Wigan Town Hall.

Coun Molyneux added: "Sporting success is part of the fabric of our borough and hopefully a new chapter in our illustrious history can be written this weekend."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
