Had the pleasure of his company what a nice bloke he really was,my dad always rated him as a fine, fine player just a bit before my time though.

A loss that’s for sure.

In Memoriam: Bill Ashurst

Tonight, Wigan Warriors are devastated to hear of the passing of former player Bill Ashurst.

Born in Ince, Wigan in 1948, Ashurst went on to play for his hometown Club – making 185 appearances, scoring 74 tries and kicking 146 goals in two separate spells between 1968 and 1978.

He became a Harry Sunderland Trophy winner in 1971 and also represented Great Britain three times.

All our thoughts at the Club are with Bill’s family and friends at this very sad time.

A full obituary will follow soon.

As a young boy I watched Bill Ashurst break into the Wigan team . He became my hero. He is to this day my favourite Wigan player.

Probably one of the best back rows we have had - Ashurst, Robinson, Laughton.
