Strongest Squad

Post by Brennox7 »

Just putting the fealers out there to see what people think are our strongest Squad now a few are playing well/coming back from injury..I must admit, it's a nice place to find ourselves half way through the year that we are still coping with a 6 injured and a centre leaving half way through the year...

Field
French
KPP
Isa (Thornley to slow for me)
Marshall
Cust
Smith (Superb since win at wire)
Byrne
Powell
Singo
Faz
Batty
Ellis

Smithies
Mago
Leuleui
Havard

Leaves Shorrocks, Partington, Miski, O Neill all warming seats..I think last year we would have been comfortable to see those names in a starting line up. I fancy us this year! Cheers and have a good weekend!

On the above team:

KPP - isn't a centre week in week out, very much more effective in the back row!
Thornley - very sceptical of his return, I think he looks effective when not injured!
Isa - like KPP not a centre, like Faz, superb efforts, not naturally suited though!
Havard - starting line up prop for me (along with Byrne who has pushed on well)!
Smith - excellent progress, full credit, not fully convinced he is or on field general week in week out!
Shorrocks - lot of potential for a specialist 13 IMO (not a hooker and more effective at 13 than 12)!
Partington - huge fan, great aggression, sadly I think he might be gone end of season!
O'Neill - in some respect very different to Powell and young, why sell him or release him? Same as Shorrocks?
Miski - could be correct 4 made trys against Toulouse doesn't convince me, wont displace our wingers!

It's hard to pick a 'certain 17', I like the idea of Field and Cust in the halves, but Field is immense at FB as is French. Leuluai, wrong side of 35, but for me, he does still deliver, Powell V O'Neill etc. I thing as long as we have depth and options and stay fit around October, anything is possible!

Can't argue with any of that. So it's all good. But of course, injuries will happen.

It’s a question that’s ticked through my mind a few times. We’ve not been lucky enough to have every single player available at any point yet but it might not be far off if everyone stays healthy.

The big questions in my mind would be who is at right centre? Who is in the halves? And then how is the bench made up. If we had a big semi final/final tomorrow and every player was available, I think I’d go-

Field
French KPP Bibby Marshall
Leuluai Smith
Singleton Powell Ellis
Bateman Farrell Smithies

Subs
Byrne Havard Mago Cust

Tough call on Thornley but I just think KPP could produce big moments in a big game, with an offload or getting other the top of his opposite number. The halfback choice is really tough. It feels like Smith has cemented one spot and when I think back to how Tommy settled us down in the CC final, I’d like him on the field for the full game and Cust can add good impact, either from 6 or 9. The last call I had a struggle with was Mago or Partington. He’s so laid back Mago and couldn’t be any more different times how Partington plays but Mago, a bit like I said with KPP, might just have that big moment in him that can crack a big game open.

It’s a little bit worrying when people are picking two second rowers for the centre position. Shows the quality of our centres at the club at the moment.
It want to be a top club we need proper centres

Agree mainly but would play Bateman at 13 and bring KKP in instead of Isa. Big fan off Isa think he always gives his all but would go with KKP
