Wigan v Warrington for Locker Cup

Post by josie andrews »

On Friday 5th August Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves will play for the Locker Cup for the first time in three years.

The Cherry and Whites host the Wire (8pm K.O.) in Round 22 of the Betfred Super League in what will be Heritage Day at the DW Stadium.

To commemorate the Club’s 150th year, the Warriors will make the Warrington fixture as a day of celebration. On 18th January 1873, Wigan played their first ever game as a Rugby League Club – against Warrington. Next Friday’s game will see the whole Club – including a host of past players – come together to celebrate 150 years of history, as we encourage all fans to wear your retro shirts.

The game will also have more than just two points on offer with the Locker Cup on the line – for the first time since 2019.

Prior to the introduction of Super League in 1996, Wigan and Warrington played in the Locker Cup charity match 24 times. The friendly was regularly played in August, rotated between each home ground as a warm-up match for the start of the new season – before the switch to summer Rugby League in 1996.

Between 1972 and 1995, Wigan and Warrington each won it 12 times. Warrington won it for the 13th time in 2019 when the Locker Cup was played for the first time in 24 years – at the Super League Magic Weekend at Anfield, Liverpool.

The Locker Cup was previously known as the Wardonia Cup and was contested between Wigan and Warrington on 29 occasions after first being introduced in 1938.

Overall, the trophy has been played for on 54 occasions – Wigan winning 32 times, Warrington winning 21 and one draw.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
