Match Report as Wigan Warriors Reserves win against Wakefield Trinity Reserves.

Wigan scored eight tries, including a Ben O’Keefe hat-trick as they cruised to victory in the Grand Final.

FT | Wigan Warriors 40-12 Wakefield Trinity.

Wigan scored four tries either side of half time to ease to victory over Wakefield Trinity in the Reserves Grand Final.

Ben O’Keefe registered a first half hat-trick as Wigan scored four in the opening half to rack up an 18-6 lead.

Wakefield got back in touching distance with an effort from Phillips before a Sam Halsall double got the Warriors futher ahead. Alex Sutton and Logan Astley added two more scores in the final 10 minutes of the game as Wigan won 40-12 and were crowned Reserves Champions.

Report

Wigan kicked out on the full from kick off to give Wakefield the first attempt in attack, they powered towards the goal line but couldn’t make the most of the first set. Wigan got a penalty which took them to half way and slick hands saw Sam Halsall send Ben O’Keefe over in the left corner, O’Keefe missed the conversion but Wigan led 4-0 after 3 minutes.

Wigan extended their lead in the 15th minute as Kieran Tyrer sold a dummy to create a gap, which he darted through to score under the uprights. Ben O’Keefe added the extras as Wigan went to 10-0.

Wigan were having the majority of posession with the wet weather owing to handling errors. Another attack saw them go close through Toby Brannan in the centre before the ball was shifted left to see Halsall send O’Keefe in for his second, but was short with the touchline conversion.

A few minutes later Wakefield got their opening score of the game, a testing kick from Butterworth was collected by Hanley but he was clattered immediately, spilling the ball to see Butterworth collect and dive under the sticks, he converted his own effort to make it 14-6 with 10 minutes to go until the break.

Wigan had to play out the remainder of the half with a man less as James McDonnell was sent to the sin bin on the half hour mark, the opportunity gave Wakefield good field position but the ball was spilled to see Wigan back with the ball in hand, they streamed up the field and good hands saw Logan Astley break through to touch down, the effort was pulled back for a forward pass however and it remained 14-6.

Ben O’Keefe registered a first half hat-trick as Wigan extended their lead right on the stroke of half time. A pass out left was collected for O’Keefe to dive in at the corner, his conversion attempt from the touchline ricocheted off the bar as the teams went in 18-6 at the break.

With more of an arm wrestle in the second half it took until the 51st minute for the next breakthrough and it came in favour of the visitors. Josh Phillips powered his way over despite the efforts from the Warriors defence, which Butterworth converted for 18-12.

With Wigan on the ropes, Wakefield was looking for another score but a pass on the right edge was intercepted by Sam Halsall who raced 80m to score under the sticks for a fantastic try, the effort was converted by O’Keefe to put Wigan two scores ahead.

Sam Halsall was in again a few minutes later, linking up once more with Ben O’Keefe. Halsall sent O’Keefe away who ran down the wing before returning the favour on the inside to Halsall who raced towards the uprights. O’Keefe added the two points to make it 30-12 with 15 minutes to go.

Wigan confirmed the Grand Final victory as Alex Sutton furthered the lead in the 74th minute. A fantastic offload in the build-up from James McDonnell created an overlap on the right edge which Sutton took advantage over, the conversion from O’Keefe didn’t have the legs but it was 34-12.

Logan Astley rounded off the afternoon as he was in support for Junior Nsemba, Astley scoring under the uprights and converted by Ben O’Keefe to make it 40-12 on the full time hooter. Unbeaten in the league and a fantastic effort in the final see Wigan crowned Reserves Champions.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I have just watched the reserves grand final. There looked to be some talent on show. I was impressed by Halsall, Nsemba and several others. I imagine a few will get a first team run out next season. It is a shame that we have lost a couple of talented second rows, especially if the rumours about Bateman continue.

Watched it last night. Very good. You never know if players will make the leap to first-grade rugby, but I like the look of Forber.

And, surely, should never have presented. Impossible to think it wasn't noticed befire they were dished out. Lesser of two evils, it would have been better to say to the players, there's been a hitch with the medals, we can't give them to you now, we'll do a little ceremony in a day or two. Rather that, than dish oit that crap.
