Post by josie andrews »

Ahead of the Rugby League World Cup, which kicks off this weekend, we have taken a look at all 16 Wigan Warriors representatives across the competitions.

Men

The Men’s competition gets underway on Saturday 15th October at St James’ Park in Newcastle as hosts England face Samoa.

Three Warriors have been named in Shaun Wane’s World Cup squad in Mike Cooper, Kai Pearce-Paul and John Bateman though Bateman is unavailable for the opening fixture as he serves the final game of a three-match ban.

In Group C, the Warriors have representatives for both Ireland and Lebanon. Liam Byrne, new loan signing Toby King and the departing James McDonnell have all been selected for the wolfhounds, whilst Abbas Miski will represent Lebanon.

Group C gets underway on Sunday 16th October and the two sides will come face-to-face on Sunday 23rd October at Leigh Sports Village.

PDRL

PDRL will also have a World Cup showcase event over a week in October and Wigan PDRL Captain Ben Seward has been selected to represent England.

England will face Australia in their opening match of the tournament on Sunday 23rd October, before taking on Wales two days later and completing their group matches against New Zealand on Friday 28th October.

All group matches are at Warrington’s Victoria Park, with the Final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday 30th October.

Women

In the Women’s competition, the Warriors have representatives in each of the two groups for England and France.

Wigan Vice-Captain Victoria Molyneux and outside back Georgia Wilson have both been picked in Craig Richards’ squad, they start their campaign on Tuesday 1st November against Brazil at Headingley Stadium.

In Group B, new recruit Lauréane Biville has been selected for France and is hoping to add to her seven international caps. The French outfit start their World Cup against New Zealand on Wednesday 2nd November at LNER Community Stadium in York.

Wheelchair

The Wheelchair competition is the final to kick off, as the Copperbox Arena in London plays host from Thursday 3rd November.

The Warriors have representatives from four Countries in the Wheelchair game including Phil Roberts and Mark Williams who faced off last weekend in a warm-up fixture.

In addition, Adam Rigby and top-scorer Declan Roberts have once again been selected to represent England on the international stage. Finally, Matt Wooloff completes the haul, as he pulls on a USA shirt in the tournament.

Father and son duo, Phil Roberts and Declan Roberts will come face-to-face as England face Ireland in Round 3 of Group A on Wednesday 9th November.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
