Former Wigan Warriors head coach Michael Maguire confirms new club for 2023

Michael Maguire has finally confirmed his coaching future following a three-club race for the former Wigan Warriors boss.

The current New Zealand Kiwis head coach has been in demand since he left his role as coach of the Wests Tigers during the 2022 season.

And despite interest from the Canterbury Bulldogs and Parramatta Eels, Maguire will link up with the Canberra Raiders for the next campaign following the conclusion of the Rugby League World Cup.

The 48-year-old will assist Ricky Stuart in Australia’s capital, a combination which excites the current Raiders head coach.

“Michael is a wonderful signing for our club and he brings valuable experience and knowledge to the role,” Stuart told the club’s website.

“He has a wonderful record as a coach at all levels of the game and we’re very fortunate to be able to secure someone of his calibre.

“I can’t wait to work with him and have him working alongside our coaching staff and playing group.”

Maguire brings a wealth of coaching experience to the green machine, having led teams to titles on both sides of the world.

After guiding Wigan to league and cup glory across his two seasons in Super League in 2010 and 2011, Maguire took over at the South Sydney Rabbitohs ahead of the 2012 season.

Adding to his glowing CV, he led the Bunnies to the 2014 NRL Premiership and ended their long 21-year wait for a title.

After leaving Souths in 2017, Maguire became the Kiwis boss in 2018 and was appointed West Tigers head coach in 2019.

He left the Tigers earlier this season after a tough run of form, with Canberra now hopeful they can benefit from Maguire’s qualities in 2023 as they look to recover from a difficult 2022 season.
