2023 squad numbers announced

Jai Field will wear the No.1 shirt, with Bevan French taking No.2

New signings Toby King and Jake Wardle will wear No.3 and No.4 respectively.

Shirt printing available in-store from Wednesday 28th December at 10am.

Wigan Warriors confirm the first team squad numbers for the 2023 season.

There are 29 first team players for next year, with Liam Marshall (5), Cade Cust (6), Brad Singleton (8), Sam Powell (9), Willie Isa (11), Liam Farrell (12) and Kaide Ellis (15) all retaining their respective numbers from last season.

New signings Toby King (3) and Jake Wardle (4) have been given their squad numbers.

Following an impressive 2022 in the fullback position, Jai Field will wear the number 1 shirt, with Bevan French – equally as formidable on the wing – taking the number 2 shirt.

After an impressive season where he was awarded the Warriors’ Young Player of the Season, Harry Smith moves up to the number 7 shirt – last-worn by the recently retired Thomas Leuluai.

Morgan Smithies will take the vacated number 13 shirt for the new season, synonymous with so many great Wigan players across the years.

Liam Byrne (10), Ethan Havard (16), Kai Pearce-Paul (17), Joe Shorrocks (19), Brad O’Neill (22), Abbas Miski (23), Logan Astley (24), Alex Sutton (25), Junior Nsemba (27), Zach Eckersley (28) and Ramon Silva (30) have all been given new squad numbers. Tom Forber (29) also joins the squad.

Since 2008, the No.18 shirt has been awarded to the Wigan Warriors fans as a way to recognise their valued and loyal support and that is no different for 2023.

Don’t know why Isa has retained the 11 shirt when players like Mago drop down 12 places!!

So glad Smithies has been awarded the 13 shirt 😊 2 years overdue IMO

That’s a very thin squad. There are 22 players with regular first team experience out of 29 and those 22 include nos 9, 11, 21 & 23 who in my opinion should not be in it either due being past it or just not good enough (or both) and I am not convinced no 19 should not be in that list. If Faz or KPP gets injured we are screwed in the back row.

Backs look fine with two centres at long last and their is enough props. I have not looked at what other compromises other teams have made but Wigan need to learn how to move players on regardless of how well they buy into the culture if they are just not good enough or need to retire.

Can Ellis play back row? Might be a better bet than Isa who’s body can no longer do what his head no doubt wants it to do.

My thoughts too when I saw the squad very thin on quality past 1-17 they sort out the centre issue which is fine but elsewhere lose fax or KPP as you say and it’ll be grim .

Interesting to read between the lines on this. I'm assuming Matty Peet has full control over squad numbers.

The recent 2 year deal and the 11 shirt could show the value of Big Willie - to the coach at least!

Mago at 20, and KPP at 17 are telling decisions too. My guess would be that if Kai had signed a contract extension, he'd have been given the 11 shirt. And that Mago's days are numbered unless he shapes up.

As to number 9, I can't believe that Matty hasn't listened to the collective wisdom readily available. Sam can't be his love child - surely, he's not old enough????

Still, this is what you get when you choose a coach on a jobs-for-the boys basis. :D :D :D :D
