Alcedo Futures Days

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are delighted to announce the dates for our first Alcedo Futures Day Sessions during February Half term.

The sessions take place during each school holiday and provide an opportunity for junior players to work on their technical, tactical and physical skills.

The programme is sponsored by Alcedo Care, allowing players not on a Scholarship programme a route into a performance pathway. The programme has already benefitted current Wigan first team players, including Ethan Havard who was on the programme as a 15-year-old and is now a consistent starter in the first team and made his England Knights debut in 2022.

Speaking on the programme Head of Youth, Shane Eccles, said: “These sessions are designed to showcase Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and youth performance department and the work that we do with the junior players at the Club in preparing them to progress along the pathway. These sessions are vital for us to work with the young players and help them towards achieving their aspirations as rugby players.

“It is always great seeing the progress of players over the year and then watching them in Community games working on and implementing the skills that we focus on during the sessions. We can’t wait to get these sessions up and running and can’t thank Alcedo Care enough of the sponsorship they have provided and how this can improve our sessions even further this year.”

Programme lead, Tom Marsh, added: “I have been coaching on our Futures programme for over 5 years now and I feel it has gone from strength-to-strength from when I started to 2022/2023. This year the support of Alcedo Care will help boost this even more. With each participant receiving a t-shirt, it will bring more of a squad feeling and give them a sense of belonging to Wigan.

“As part of the Foundation we aim to work with as many Community clubs as we can throughout the year. This programme is a great opportunity for participants at the Clubs to showcase the skills they are learning when they are being coached by Foundation staff and youth performance coaches

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
