Matt Previews previews Saturday’s Magic Weekend clash against Catalans Dragons.

Peet: “It has a big match feel, it’s in a big stadium, but it’s also a big test for us.“

Wigan Warriors v Catalans Dragons, Saturday 3 June, St James’ Park, 3:45pm K.O.

Matt Peet spoke to the press on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s Magic Weekend clash with Catalans Dragons at St James’ Park.

Wigan will be aiming to record a third straight victory, after recent wins over Leeds Rhinos – in the Sixth Round of the Challenge Cup – and at Hull KR following Liam Farrell’s last gasp additional time hat-trick.

Reflecting on the golden point victory, Peet said: “We’ve had a decent weekend off the back of the win, and have just about processed it. There are still areas we need to improve in, but in the context of the match we can take pride in the way we finished the game off to get the win.”

The Warriors now turn their attention to Catalans Dragons, who sit level on points with Wigan in the Super League table, as the sides prepare for their first ever Magic Weekend meeting.

Speaking on the annual occassion, Peet said: “There’s excitement around this fixture and it’s one people look forward to. It has a big match feel, it’s in a big stadium, but it’s also a big test for us.”

Wigan were beaten by the Dragons in Round Four at the DW Stadium, and with the French side on a three match Super League winning run, Peet is aware of the challenge ahead.

He said: “It was a tough night against a very intelligent Catalans side who taught us a lesson on how to play in those conditions, and Saturday will be another difficult test. They have a fantastic squad with plenty of experience, and they have a lot of threat – they’re an outstanding team.”

At the half-way point in the season, the Cherry and Whites sit two points off top spot with a Challenge Cup Quarter Final tie against Warrington Wolves to come next month.

Reflecting on Wigan’s season so far, Peet said: “We’re still building on our journey, in which we have had good days and bad. We’ve had a strong few days in training where the lads have pushed themselves hard, so hopefully it all pays off.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
