Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

FT | Wigan Warriors Women’s Academy 34-18 St Helens Women’s Academy.

Eva Hunter scored a hat-trick as Wigan Warriors Women’s Academy defeated St Helens 34-18 at Wigan St Judes in the first of four derbies this week.

After an emphatic 74-0 win over Warrington Wolves in their opening match of the season, Warriors Women’s Academy made it two from two with an impressive victory in the derby against Saints.

Wigan started strongly, and after a trio of powerful forward carries, the ball was passed out to Hunter who broke clear before side-stepping the Saints defender to open the scoring after five minutes. Jodie Morris added the extras from the tee.

Saints responded instantly as Amber Harmon found enough space on the wing to accelerate in under the sticks. The visitors were unable to add the extras to level the contest.

The Cherry and Whites added a second try through Cerys Jones who, after a neat offload from J. Morris, sprinted from half way before fending off the attempted tackle to touch down. The extra two points were successfully kicked to put Warriors 12-4 ahead.

The visitors replied before the mid-point in the half when Hollie Brussels burst over in the corner after the ball had been worked along the line. The kick was once again unsuccessful.

Wigan extended their advantage on 24 minutes when J. Morris timed her short pass to perfection to allow Hunter to dive over in the corner for her second of the evening.

Hunter completed her hat-trick courtesy of a fantastic 60m solo run which saw the centre touch down under the posts with 32 minutes on the clock. J. Morris added the extra two to give Warriors a 22-8 lead.

With the final play of the half, Warriors added a fifth try when Lucy Johnson powered over after being set up by Lily Wilkinson’s short pass. J. Morris added the extras to give Wigan a 28-8 half time lead.

Despite a slow start to the second half due to multiple injury stoppages, Wigan extended their advantage on the hour when Johnson crashed over from close range for her second try. The kick was accurate once more from J. Morris to widen the points difference to 34-8.

Saints finished the contest strongly by scoring two tries in the final five minutes. First Isobelle Wood touched town in the corner before Chloe Hunt stepped back inside and through a gap to score. Erin McDonald accurately added the goal with the final action of the match, as Warriors recorded a 34-18 derby victory.
