Wigan winger to be loaned out

Wigan Warriors winger Tom Davies is likely to spend the 2020 season out on loan.

The 22-year-old is currently recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in the Good Friday derby defeat to St Helens. Wigan will have four senior wingers next season in Joe Burgess, Dom Manfredi, Liam Marshall and Davies, while new recruit Bevan French can also play on the wing. Davies is contracted to the Warriors until the end of 2023 and a season-long loan might be good for his development.

I think its justified to certainly 'loan' at least one winger out in 2020 considering our options. That said, if it is Davies, I hope it wont be an 'Escare style loan' and it closes the door for a return to Wigan.

Although its rumoured Leeds Rhinos are looking at Davies, its hard to say who id actually prefer to see go!

Its not certain Bevan French will play on the wing is it? For me, Joe Burgess (pound for pound) is the most effective winger we have when fully fit (2015 onwards), but his form towards the latter stages of this season was frankly a disgrace!

Although Manfredi is back in training (excellent news) and despite the fact he is clearly made of steel, there must be a big question mark over whether he can find his form/pace he once had?

Liam Marshall has grown on me this season, I think he gives 100% but for me is slightly too small and doesn't have the same impact as the others. Could be another Lewis Tierney (superleague quality but not Wigan).

I think Tom Davies is very worthy of his No 2 jersey, but again we are presuming Bibby will play centre, Zak will be fullback and French on the Wing.

Could French be a Coote style fullback with Zak at centre?

I don't understand with the obsession of trying Zak at centre, for me he's happiest at FB,French is more like Escare/Tierney type player who while very fast will struggle against the big men at FB when next season comes a calling, asuming of course they can catch him.

As for Davies next season will be one of recovery, let him go out on loan it'll do him good, that injury will take some coming back from so even with the reserves now it'd be better if he's getting first team games under his belt

Davies is a liability. Forever costing us tries when he plays. Bit of experience on loan at a club with less pressure to perform at the highest level week in week out may just be what he needs. Still only young, a lot to learn

I don’t know which Davies you’ve been watching! He is very good in defence!

The only reason I can see Wigan wanting to send Tom out on loan is to free up some salary cap. If it is about him regaining fitness he can do that in the reserves. At the moment, it appears to me that all our wingers have got injuries, admittedly Tom’s and Dom’s are more serious., so at the present time there is no logic in letting any of them go out on loan. Yes that situation may change nearer to the start of the season when the medics have a better understanding.

Poor under the high ball, too narrow on defence and a lot of teams score tries in his corner when he is playing, they target him without doubt, jumps out of the line and is caught out far too often.
like I say still young and a loan move may help him. Im certainly not writing him off.

Please explain what you mean by too narrow on defence.

Very interested to what you have to say on that one.

im thinking he means strays from his wing spot..... doesnt stay with his opposite winger

A winger needs to jam in if his centre does likewise. If he follows that principle then those inside him are the ones at fault.
