England head coach Shaun Wane linked to top NRL job

Post by josie andrews »

Wane has spoken previously about his desire to coach Down Under

England head coach Shaun Wane is being lined up to replace Paul McGregor at St George Illawarra Dragons, according to reports.

After the Dragons’ disastrous start to the NRL campaign, McGregor is under fire in Wollongong and according to The Mole, Wane is a name being considered to replace the former Australia international at the helm should he lose his job.

McGregor has been head coach of St George since taking over from Steve Price in 2014, but performances have dropped off significantly this season and as a result they remain the only winless team in the competition.

His position has come into question and a meeting has been held to discuss his future at the club, but the board have publicly backed him to turn their season around.

Nevertheless, The Mole’s report claims the club are exploring options elsewhere, too, and they may look to the England coach, who has recently appointed an Australian agent.

Wane was unveiled as the England coach in February, but hasn’t been able to meet up with his players yet given the global pandemic and after the cancellation of the Ashes series planned for the end of the season, it could be next year before he takes charge of his first international game.

However, he has spoken previously about his desire to coach Down Under and the report suggests that St George could look to take advantage of the hole in his calendar by bringing him to the NRL.

Wasn’t one of the reasons Waney was appointed England coach was because he was based in England?

Shaun won the LLS, Cup and League Championship as Wigan head coach.
He's now the England coach yet has always had an ambition to coach in the NRL.
I wish him well, he did great for Wigan and there was almost a final a year during his leadership.
Coaching England if he does land an NRL job I don't think it would be too much of a problem. He knows the England players and SL is available on Aussie tv.
Hope he gets an NRL job if that's what he wants.

Good luck to him, not much point just having the England job when there are no games to be played.

He doesn't have a"record" in theNRL; never even played in the NRL let alone coached there: he's very much an unknown quantity for the Dragons to take a chance with; a desperate chance at that me thinks. Time will tell if the rumour comes to fruition. 👍

Just as Michael Maguire was for us, never coached in the UK, or played, didn't turn out too bad!! Good luck to SW if he goes, he might not be everyone's top choice for style of play but give the guy a chance
