Re: Doncaster Lakers

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Didn't their financial backer pull out? Remember reading an article about them pushing for SL status and that they had the backing of their local MP.

Shouldn't have paid millions for their new stadium then should they? Yes I know... they didnt pay millions but renting is the same thing.

So much for them wanting a SL Franchise in a few years eh?

sounds an odd one this...brand new stadium and things should be on the up. however, it seems that mis-management is rife and someone has been living with their heads in the clouds.

from what i can understand they have strengthened the team and have a fair few fulltimers- think theyve been hoping that the team would be succesful and crowd numbers would increase dramtically- hence why theyve been spending a small fortune on advertising and PR. they have also been giving away free tickets by the bucketload

however, the team have been poor and the supporters havent actually been paying to take their seats!

smacks of mis-managament- still sad for the game of rugby league as a whole though, as alot of schools play rl in the area and with the increased strength of the doncaster ru team this could see the end of another traditional area of rl.
NOBLE OUT PLEASE- YOU'VE HAD TIME AND NOW MY PATIENCE HAS RUN OUT!

IT'S ONE THING TO LOSE, IT'S ANOTHER TO PLAY DIRE AND BORING RL AND THEN LOSE!

The owner kept them afloat for several years. With the new stadium (the club pay rent it is a shared stadium) he was persuaded to employ lots of full time staff and players. They sold him the idea they could create a SL Franchise.

The problem in RL is that many so called professionals have no idea despite their claims to the contrary. Even today, those individuals argue their strateg was working. The strategy being hand out free tickets like confetti, wine/dine businesses, lots of pre match entertainment. Paying out for this was a huge expense and hardly and money has been coming in. One of the coaches got the club to employ his unqualified brother as an academy coach. Both are now gone. Results on the field were poor. All the rats are desrting the sinking ship leaving one confused owner and desperate fans.

Further proof that he salary cap is no panacea in RFL nor are franchises. Swinton are also in financial trouble.

Re The Stadium - The council built it. Doncaster Rovers Football Club and Doncasters Lakers RL Club are merely tenants.

The simple problem is they are not getting the crowds to fund the cost of their operation.

They didn't help matters by changing their name to Lakers and ditching their traditional colours (which have now returned).

They have put he cart before the horse going full time on the back of an assumption that as of 2007 being at the Keepmoat stadium they would bring the money in. They moved there in Dec 2006 so this is their first full season at the new ground.

It is the realisation that with what appears to be everything in place, (new ground and full time team) that they are losing money that is brought everything to a sudden halt.

Doncaster were supporters of the franchise idea and at least on the surface looked to meet many of the critia better than some SL sides.

In short the interest from the locals is not sufficient to sustain the club. Which to me sounds not unlike the situation Orrell RU were in when Mo and DW were involved only to find less people turning up to watch than members.

Looking at the Lakers web site it looks slick and they have had some on-field success so it is hard to see a future for the pro game there if the crowds are not there.

Had they remained part time and moved to the stadium maybe funds would nopt be so stretched alowing them to establish themselves as it all now seems a bit rushed.
