Leeds Rhinos v Wigan: Sutcliffe steps in as Sinfield is ruled out

Post by josie andrews »

LEEDS RHINOS captain Kevin Sinfield will miss tonight’s visit of Wigan Warriors due to a hamstring problem suffered in last week’s defeat at Warrington Wolves.

Liam Sutcliffe has been called into the squad and is set to take over at stand-off, with Danny McGuire skippering the team.

“He’s a big hole to fill,” coach Brian McDermott said of Sinfield. “He’s a fantastic player for us and very influential so we’ll miss him when he’s not in team, but what we have out there is good enough and Liam Sutcliffe certainly shows a lot of promise and has has delivered in the past.”

Rhinos will be without prop Kylie Leuluai, due to a biceps/rib cartilage injury. McDermott said: “If we’re honest, he shouldn’t have played against Warrington, but we thought he’d get through okay.”

Andy Yates, who has been playing for Hunslet Hawks on dual-registration, is set to take over on the bench. Zak Hardaker could return at full-back after a disciplinary issue led to him being dropped last week.

Wigan are without winger Josh Charnley (ankle), stand-off Sam Powell (calf tear) and prop Ryan Sutton (concussion). Players in contention for a recall are Dom Manfredi, Connor Farrell, James Greenwood, Ryan Hampshire and Logan Tomkins.

Manfredi will replace Charnley, with George Williams stepping up from the bench to start at stand-off.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
