St Helens academy star Joe Sharratt has suffered serious head injuries after an incident in Manchester at the weekend.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating the matter after Sharratt was hospitalised with his injuries.

Sharratt was part of the Lancashire Schoolboys team that played against Australia on Saturday and could have played for England schoolboys against Australia.

Factory fight: Manchester bouncers sacked over assault

Bouncers from Manchester's Factory 251 nightclub have been sacked after an 18-year-old rugby league player was assaulted outside the club.

St Helens academy player Joe Sharratt suffered a serious head injury and is in a stable condition in hospital.

His mother Jane Sharratt told the BBC that he had a bleed on the brain but was now "sitting up and talking".

Video footage shows Mr Sharratt being thrown to the ground before door staff repeatedly punch his friend.

Greater Manchester Police has appealed for witnesses to the attack at 03:20 GMT on Sunday. It has also asked Manchester City Council to carry out an expedited review and to suspend the nightclub's licence.

Factory said it "immediately terminated the service contract" with the security contractor Professional Security.

The security contractor also confirmed that it has sacked the staff involved.

A statement on the company's website stated: "We can confirm that Professional Security has terminated the contracts of all of the security personnel involved in this incident.

"We are also working closely with the local authorities, police, and the Security Industry Authority to ensure that appropriate action is taken swiftly against all of these door supervisors."

The company said it was "appalled by the behaviour of the door supervisors shown in the footage of this incident, which contradicts everything that we strive to achieve".

'Cover-up attempt'

In a damning report to the city council's licensing committee, police stated there were concerns about "serious disorder" and "extreme violence", and were concerned nobody at the club contacted police.

The report states the way the club dealt with the incident pointed towards a "lack of duty of care".

It goes on to say a member of the public was "left with a bleed on the brain" that could have "ended up as a fatality" and adds: "The fact that the premises didn't bother to contact the police is extremely concerning.

"This would suggest either a worrying level of incompetence at best or, more seriously, a possible attempt to cover up the incident."

Mr Sharratt had played for Lancashire Academy against Australian Schoolboys just hours earlier and has been tipped to represent England Youth.

A St Helens spokesman said: "Joe is of impeccable character and is an upstanding member of our Academy system.

"He is a top academic achiever with a very bright future ahead of him alongside his rugby league prowess."

Factory, which opened in 2010, said: "Having viewed CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media, we can only say that we are shocked by what we have seen."

The Princess Street club is housed in what was once the headquarters of the Factory Records label that represented Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays and The Hacienda nightclub.

Ch Insp Cherie Buttle said: "With a mobile phone at everyone's fingertips, filming something is often the first thing people think to do but please, pass this on to us so we can fully investigate this matter."

Interesting that the smallest bouncer on the video was the one dishing the most out!

The worst bit of the video (and i accept its all disgusting) is the guy right at the end who i think should be done for attempted murder

after Joes friend is finally down on all fours he is being held by 1 or 2 bouncers and then another crouches behind him and starts kidney punching him - this can easily cause serious, irreversible damage and the fact its done after the melee has stopped makes it all the more disgusting

Agree 100%, they should all be answerable to the most serious charges, with sentences to match.

And why does it take 6 or 7 (?) burly bouncers to take on a couple of slight teenagers, who never threw a punch back, even in retaliation. Shameful.

I totally agree their actions were disgusting. I certainly hope the lad makes a full recovery.

St Helens provide positive update on Joe Sharratt after alleged assault

St Helens have confirmed academy player Joe Sharratt is "sat up in bed and recovering well" following a visit from officials after he sustained serious head injuries in Manchester.

The 18-year-old centre suffered the injuries during an alleged assault by bouncers outside Factory 251 nightclub in Manchester in the early hours of Sunday morning. They have since been sacked for their role in the attack.

Sharratt played for Lancashire schoolboys against their Australian counterparts on Saturday and was earmarked for a place in the England schoolboys team this weekend.

St Helens released a statement on Monday to confirm that Sharratt was hospitalised after the incident and gave an update on Tuesday evening on the club's official website.

A statement read: "Officials from the club visited Joe Sharratt in the neurology ward at Salford Royal today and were pleased to find him sat up in bed and recovering well.

"Joe will remain in hospital for the next couple of days but the prognosis is good and he is progressing well. The player, his family and the club have been overwhelmed by well-wishers and messages from across the rugby league community.

We have been truly moved by the support from all areas of the game and we would like to thank everyone who has contacted us at this distressing time. Your support really is appreciated by us all."

Sharratt has not yet featured for the Saints first-team ,but played 24 times for the Under-19 side last season, scoring four tries.
