Lee Radford talks Jake Connor's suspension appeal for derby and why 'nasty side' must remain

Post by josie andrews »

Hull FC will ‘fight tooth and nail’ to rid the suspension of Jake Connor for Friday’s derby opener against Hull KR.

That’s the vow of coach Lee Radford, who was speaking to BBC Radio Humberside ahead of tomorrow’s tribunal hearing.

The England international playmaker was handed a one-match ban for Grade B foul and abusive language to a match official in Hull’s final friendly at St Helens.

Radford hopes to have his versatile star available, especially given the continued fitness doubt of former Rovers talisman Albert Kelly.

“Jake has a tribunal tomorrow that we’ll go to, to see if we can fight his cause and get him off the suspension that he’s been handed,” Radford told the station.

“It’s too tricky to go into, we’ll argue our case and see what comes of it. If he’s found guilty then he serves his suspension, if he gets off you have a happy coach.

“I think the way he plays is on the edge. He plays right on that. He’s that bloke you can’t tackle – Danny McGuire is very similar in that’s what makes them good. They have the X-factor about them, where they feel they can’t be touched. They’re ultra-competitive and ultra-dangerous.

“Does it go over the other side sometimes? Definitely. The more we can keep that in balance, the better for us.

What we said with the excitement of round one, it’s a more interesting game with Jake playing so we’re going to fight tooth and nail for that to happen. The Rovers fans may not think it but for the competition, he’s been outstanding on the field. If we can get him off we’ll be over the moon.”

Rovers coach Tim Sheens, also on the panel at a joint fans forum, quipped: “You want your quality players on the field, if Albey and Jake play, then it’s going to feel like a better win for us!”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
