LONDON BRONCOS STUN WAKEFIELD

LONDON BRONCOS 42-24 WAKEFIELD TRINITY

Doubles from Rhys Williams and Eddie Battye helped London Broncos secure a 42-24 win over Wakefield, their first victory in the Betfred Super League since 2014.

Wakefield started quickly with Craig Kopczak and Ryan Hampshire scoring in the first 10 minutes.

Broncos, though, got their first score since winning promotion last season through Matty Fleming, before Jacob Miller extended Wakefield’s advantage.

Williams, Kieran Dixon and Battye scored to give the Broncos the lead, which they then extended to 26-18 through Matty Fozard just before half-time.

Wakefield’s Kyle Wood scored after the break to reduce the gap but second scores from Williams and Battye, as well Elliot Kear’s try, sealed their opening win of the season.

London head coach Danny Ward said: "We had a couple of nice sets with the ball, got into the game, got a feel for it and played some good football.

“I already knew what they were capable of and I think it will give the boys real belief as well."

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester said: “Without taking too much credit away from London, we killed ourselves today with a lack of respect for the ball.

“I’m extremely disappointed. It’s probably the worst performance since I’ve been involved here."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Reports – Crowd trouble in Ealing

Eye witness accounts suggest there were incidents of vandalism, racial abuse and a firework being set off during Sunday’s game between Wakefield and London.

It is understood a small number of supporters were ejected.

“Made me embarrassed to be a Yorkshireman with the idiotic antics today of some Wakey fans,” read the post.

“The large bang in second half was apparently a firework. Seats were being ripped out and thrown down the back of the larger of the two temporary stands.

“Match officials physically threatened by so called fans, racial abuse by so called fans.

“Shocking behaviour, I know it’s a minority but shows Wakey in a really bad light.”

Meanwhile, a video published on the Facebook page of a local delicatessen, which has since been deleted, suggests supporters intimidated bar staff and customers.

The accompanying post read: “You behaved like a bunch of t*ssers today in Ealing playing against London Broncos. You frightened our bar staff and intimidated our punters! Very delighted you lost the game.”
