Hull KR captain Joel Tomkins in hospital following Blake Austin challenge in Warrington Wolves loss

The Hull KR captain left the field injured in the first half of the 28-14 loss

Hull KR captain Joel Tomkins has been taken to hospital because of injury, coach Tim Sheens has revealed.

The skipper was taken off the field in the 26th minute of Rovers’ 28-14 defeat at Warrington Wolves due to a concussion.

Tomkins didn’t return to the field to help KR’s cause but there growing concern for the Robins’ leader as time progressed, following an incident in which Wolves star Blake Austin came in with a late hit following a break up-field by the former Wigan man.

Speaking to the media post-match, Sheens said: “I lost two with a head bin and with eight interchanges we were in trouble.

"Joel's substitution was free as he (Austin) was sin-binned through concussion.

"I haven't seen it back but I was told Austin hit him on the ground. Joel is in hospital at the moment - he doesn't go to hospital unless he is a sick boy.

"They took him in an ambulance. The player concerned has a bit of a worry this week but it doesn't help us.

"It's a tough one for referees - you're not to know that he has hit him that hard to put him in hospital. It doesn't matter when you're on the ground or on the run if you get hit flush on the head, you're going to have a problem.

"I'm not whinging about it but to lose my captain and an influential player for the majority of the game was a concern."

Centre Junior Vaivai also lasted just 15 minutes after being brought on in the second half to a similar problem, though not as severe.

"I put Junior on in the second half as an impact player, and started with Kane Linnett in the centres to them push him out to the second-row," Sheens explained.

"Junior came on and put his head in the wrong position on Benny Murdoch-Masila - and that's probably a no-no."

Rovers are also having to contend with a number of shoulder issues, with Chris Atkin one named by Sheens as to having suffered the problem.

Not good. It will be interesting to see if there are any repercussions.

Hull KR captain Joel Tomkins returns to club after hospital stay

The Rovers captain was admitted to hospital with a serious concussion

Hull KR captain Joel Tomkins has returned to Hull after being admitted to hospital in Warrington with a serious concussion.

Tomkins was taken to hospital during the game after a tackle from Wolves star Blake Austin which saw him collide with the KR skipper's head, a tackle which resulted in Austin being sent to the sin bin.

The forward left the Halliwell Jones Stadium soon after the incident and was monitored and checked over, before being released last night. Still feeling the effects, Tomkins stayed with family in Wigan last night before being driven back to Hull today.

The Rovers star could still feature for the Robins in their next match with the game against London Broncos falling outside of the seven day concussion window due to KR's next game being on Sunday, however he will be sent for further tests on Thursday and must pass a concussion test.

Even then, following a serious incident that required a hospital visit, there is every chance head coach Tim Sheens will take precautionary measures and rest his captain.
