Figures reveal how many people watch Super League on TV and at grounds this season

Post by josie andrews »

The Wigan v Leeds round two fixture attracted the biggest TV average audience so far.

Figures released on Friday show that Super League's cumulative television audience for the first four rounds is more than 25 per cent up on 2018, with over 1.7 million viewers.

The Wigan v Leeds round two fixture attracted the biggest TV average audience so far of 250,300, while the average attendance to date of 9,185 is the highest in the last five years, although the figures do not include those of newly-promoted London Broncos.

The league say the extension of a paid-for streaming service has beamed live matches into Spain, Norway, Poland, Philippines and UAE and say statistics are proving the success of the new rules, with matches lasting on average just over 91 minutes, more than seven minutes shorter than those in 2018.

The statistics also appear to demonstrate that games are now more competitive, with the average points difference decreasing from 14.3 to 13, while there have been more offloads and quicker play-the-balls.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

That's a great way to present averages. Just leave out the low numbers so the average is higher!

Trouble is London's figures could never be fully representative.
If they had a full house each game, their capacity at that stadium is just 2,500 - 3,000 which doesn't give a true picture for the League overall. Maybe put Toronto's crowds there instead ! ;)
Good to see, incidentally, that TV figures have improved 25% 'cos that is vital if we're to see any sort of improved deal going forward.

Ah but they haven't yet hit that capacity, so the unfair limit you talk about certainly hasn't affected the crowd figures they get.

A proper statistical analysis compares like with like, so would miss out London's figures for 2019 and Widnes from 2018, so comparing the same 11 teams. (The report doesn't give enough detail to say if Widnes are included or not.)

Arguably, the best way would be to compare with the equivalent games from last year, eg Wigan v Leeds etc, whenever they were played.
