Mal Meninga hails ex-Wigan Warriors ace John Bateman 'one of NRL's stand-out players'

Post by josie andrews »

John Bateman has been anointed one of the NRL's three best players so far - by Australia coach Mal Meninga.

The Kangaroos legend picked the ex-Warriors forward, alongside Luke Keary and James Tedesco, as the players who have impressed him the most after three rounds. Meninga praises Bateman's fitness, work-rate and ability to break the line.

"To be able to take the NRL by the scruff of the neck and impress people so early on, also proves to me that the English players are all so strong and talented," Meninga wrote in his column for NRL.com.

"He is such a competitor, never gives up on plays, always runs hard, always seems to get across the line. He’s one of those players who can continually break a line and score points by coming up with big plays at the right time. And he’s a very robust defender."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Just watched the first half of Canberra vs Brisbane. What a big miss Bateman is.
His powerful running and offloads, doesn’t look out of place at all I’m the NRL, even the all commentators are doing is praising him.
Don’t think he will be back in England anytime soon.
Also people say we haven’t replaced Bateman, which is true, but let’s be honest I think he’s a hard player to replace. Not many of him around

Think he’s 4th on the Dally M list at the moment!

Isnt it a unwritten rule that an englishman cant win it?
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Josh Hodgson was doing pretty well in it when he first went over but that wouldn't surprise me, especially after the reaction to makinsons golden boot
