Veteran utility back Bryson Goodwin is set to quit Warrington immediately to rejoin South Sydney - fuelling speculation that Greg Inglis’ career is close to ending.

Goodwin was one of the Rabbitohs’ most consistent players from 2013 to 2017, playing exactly 100 games for the club. While he is no superstar, he is a good honest performer who, like Inglis, can play wing, centre and fullback.

He has spent the past year in England and at 33, is nearing the end of his career. But Souths see value in him and the deal is set to happen almost immediately, suggesting that he may be replacing Inglis.

There have been rumours throughout the game in recent days that the champion Kangaroo star is close to calling it curtains on his glittering career.

Inglis has several injuries he is struggling to overcome and is also battling mental health issues.

Goodwin, son of the legendary ‘Lord’ Ted Goodwin, began his career in 2007 and has played more than 200 top grade games for Cronulla, Canterbury, Souths and Warrington.

Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis set to announce immediate retirement from rugby league

South Sydney captain Greg Inglis is set to announce his immediate retirement from rugby league as early as Monday and cop a huge salary sacrifice in the process, according to reports.

The Daily Telegraph’s Paul Crawley is reporting Inglis will meet with coach Wayne Bennett, Rabbitohs general manager of football Shane Richardson and chief executive Blake Solly on Monday morning where the star centre is expected to make his decision known.

Inglis has been battling various injuries, namely shoulder and knee complaints, and questions have been raised as to whether he can physically and mentally still withstand the rigours of the NRL.
