George Burgess considering Super League move

Post by josie andrews »

England forward George Burgess is seeking a potential return home to Super League according to the Australian Daily Telegraph.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Rabbitohs and was told earlier this week that the club would not be offering him a new deal.

George arrived at South Sydney with twin brother Tom in 2012 and has played 140 games in the NRL, scoring a try in the 2014 Grand Final triumph against Canterbury Bulldogs.

In those early years George, along with eldest brother Sam, was regarded as indispensable to the Bunnies and was one of the first names on the team sheet.

However his progress has stuttered in the the last few seasons, whereas twin brother Tom has flourished and was rewarded with a new four-year contract in January.

Older brother Sam, who is now the Rabbitohs club captain, is also tied down until 2023 and is seemingly helpless to prevent his brother departing.

Despite this, George is still very much part of head coach Wayne Bennett’s current plans and has played the last four matches from the interchange bench.

But the pair have history after Bennett, who is also England head coach, controversially left George out of his 2017 World Cup squad.

The Bradford junior was linked with Parramatta prior to this season and was close to signing for the Eels according to numerous media outlets.

Given his hefty salary, an NRL stay would seem the most likely outcome but George reportedly doesn’t like the idea of playing against his brothers.

This would make Super League the only other realistic option and with many clubs creating space on their salary cap for 2020, one of the big boys may break the bank to bring him home.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
