Although they fundamentally use the same VR system we do, which many don't like (we all know the arguments, no need to go into them here). But the Bunker does a much better job, and quicker, than our VR. Partly because the technology seems better. More camera angles, freeze frames, just a clearer view, etc. So they can usually come to the correct decision quicker.

One example is the problem of players lying in the ruck, obstructing play (or milking penalties, however you want to look at it). In the NRL they seem to have managed to get the players just to get on with the game. If dummy-halves are fractionally inconvenienced by a prone player, nine times out of ten, they just reach over him, pick up the ball, and get on with the game. Penalties are awarded only in very obvious cases. Which is how it should be, I think.

But the biggie in terms of quality of play is the pathway for teenagers into the top-level. We see lads of 17 or 18 walk into first-grade, sides, even in key positions, and make a good fist of it. But those youngsters have had a much better grounding than their equivalents in England.
This!

Because in the NRL the referees dont want to be stars blowing the whistle all the time, in our game props should be able to do 80 minutes as the get a rest every 2 minutes from the referee, Hicks will blow his whistle if a player FARTS

This and better play the balls and a much cleaner ruck........ lazy players( masila, fifita etc)bloom in our game because they can get away with all the above over here

In what way does money make it better ?
Well, by and large, the NRL doesn't lose players to other comps and sports, like SL does. And the money in the game is the main reason for that.
The good players have to be there to start with though...
they are, both here and the NRL

Why The Super League Will Never Be Great

1. Fans constantly belittle it

2. Fans worship at the altar of the NRL

3. Other stuff (Football, Union, Salary Cap, Dodgy Refs, Etc, Etc, Etc)

Whilst I agree that money, referees, youth set up etc all play their own ways to making the NRL a superior competition, does that fully 100% account for the style of play and tactics?

I have watched the NRL a lot this year and the speed, ruck play, forward play, creating space is on another level.

Is that solely down to all of these factors or are they coached different and employ different tactics ?

They are categorically not the top two reasons why super league will not be great.

You’re one of the most notable people on here who always suggests us signing players from the NRL

I have no problem with the NRL, I just don't worship it like some fans do

One of the reasons is they don’t have promotion and relegation.

They still have a second grade competition but there is no expectation they will get promoted and this is not a problem.

The NRL is the focus of it all. They don’t split their TV money across three leagues and don’t get hung up on the season being over for teams that won’t make the playoffs half way through.

They still obviously have a production line of players. Part of that will be down to money. We don’t know how many of our young players are lost to our game because they are better off financially not even trying to have a crack at a RL career.

It’s just a more attractive proposition being an RL player in the NRL. You can make money via your image rights or sponsorship. It’s the top sport so the top players are superstars and celebrities. All this will draw top athletes to the sport but also top administrators and back room staff. There’s a momentum behind the sport that we don’t have here. Here we agonise over whether we can put the salary cap up £100k and discourage publicity by including image rights in the salary cap.

What really shocked me a few years age when the TV deal was made wasn’t just the fact it wasn’t put out to tender but once it was agreed the RFL decided on its “Whole game approach” where the money was divided across all leagues and in effect the tail was wagging the dog. It completely ignored the reality of professional sport and tried to treat two semi pro and one pro league as one entity. It might be a more equitable but RL doesn’t exist in isolation and it was as if those running the game were totally blinkered to the outside world.
