Hull FC close in on Salford Red Devils forward Josh Jones as recruitment drive begins

Post by josie andrews »

The Black and Whites are known to be looking for back-rowers

Hull FC are close to completing a deal to sign Salford Red Devils back-rower Josh Jones ahead of next season.

Hull Live understands the Black and Whites have made their move to sign Jones, who has impressed under Ian Watson at the AJ Bell Stadium, with a deal now close to being finalised.

Jones has spent four seasons with the Greater Manchester outfit, but is edging closer to the end of his contract and Hull are keen to make the 26-year-old one of several new additions ahead of next season.

The former St Helens man has been in fine form for a Salford side who have taken many by surprise this season, climbing to within touching distance of the play-offs of late.

Having not missed a game for the Red Devils since the start of the campaign, Jones has bagged himself plenty of plaudits for his efforts which have seen him get over the line for five Super League tries, too.

As such, his form has caught more eyes than just Hull’s with St Helens reported to be keen on taking him back to the Totally Wicked Stadium in the off-season, while Wigan Warriors have also been linked.

However, it seems Hull have acted the quickest and look set to beat off their esteemed competition to bring Jones into their new-look pack.

Among the list of names in the final few months of their contracts at the KCOM Stadium are back-rowers Dean Hadley, Sika Manu, Mark Minichiello and loose-forward Joe Westerman and it would seem all of their futures at the club are in doubt.

With deals remaining unsigned, Hadley has attracted interest from Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity this month while Westerman is being eyed by Castleford Tigers, suggesting FC are at risk of losing the pair while the futures of Manu and Minichiello remain up in the air.

As a result, FC are known to be looking for back-row options with Brisbane Broncos’ Alex Glenn also linked and Jones certainly fits that bill.

Jones, who can also play as a centre, started his career with St Helens, where he lifted the Grand Final trophy in 2014 after helping the Saints to a 14-6 victory over Wigan Warriors.

He impressed on Merseyside and his performances prompted a switch of codes to rugby union as he landed a deal with Premiership outfit Exeter Chiefs in 2015.

But, Jones would spend just one season in Devon, failing to make an appearance as Exeter made the play-offs for the first time in their history and returned to the Super League to join Salford.

Jones has been a key figure in Watson’s side ever since, but as with a host of players at the club, an exit appears likely at the end of the season.

We should be recruiting the likes of Jones. He is a million times better than Isa.
