Hull KR step up plans to bring in Tim Sheens' successor

Post by josie andrews »

Rovers could have a new coach in place to take charge for Sunday's game

Hull KR will today step up their plans to bring in a new coach after confirming late last night the expected departure of Tim Sheens.

Following meetings with the club’s board yesterday afternoon, Sheens was relieved of his position and has had his contract at the club terminated.

The move brings an end to the 68-year-old Australian coach’s two and a half years at the Robins, five months before the end of the three-year contract he signed when leaving behind his role as director of rugby at Salford Red Devils.

Sheens departs with Rovers second from bottom of the Super League with just five wins so far this season and the club in danger of relegation.

In a short statement issued at 9.30pm, Rovers said; “A recent run of six defeats in seven league games during the current campaign, which leaves the club sat next to the bottom of the league, and an exit from the Coral Challenge Cup at the weekend, has prompted a change.”

Further comment from the club is expected to come today, including news on who will take charge of the Robins for Sunday’s home game against Wigan Warriors.

Assistant coach James Webster is expected to take training this morning as the squad gather to dissect the news and prepare for Sunday’s crucial game at Craven Park and Webster will also address the media in the afternoon alongside club captain Joel Tomkins.

However, Hull Live understands the Robins could have a new man at the helm before Sunday's game with negotiations having already begun to find a successor.

York City Knights head coach James Ford is believed to be at the top of KR’s list of targets and while under a long-term contract, sources in York have suggested Ford does have a buyout clause should a Super League club come in for him.

Prising Ford away from York at this stage of the season, or even throwing a coach with no Super League experience into a relegation battle may be seen as too much of a risk right now, with an experienced short-term option certainly a possibility for the rest of the season.

There seems to be a lot of talent outside the SL time to give it a try perhaps?

Look at how quickly Hull KR are turning the situation around

when was it edwards said he wasnt coming? are we any closer to knowing who our coach will be?
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

That is exactly what I thought & why I put it as a separate thread!

Why we can't be up front in the first place instead of all the melodrama of the "Big Announcement" palaver is beyond me because it all ends up as a big let down in the end! 🙁

Half of what we are told from the club has been rumours & speculation for months so it's just a waste of time IMO!
