Au revoir: James Maloney set to swap Penrith for UK Super League club Catalans in France

Post by josie andrews »

Two-time grand final winner James Maloney is set to finish up with Penrith at the end of the 2019 NRL to join UK Super League club Catalans.

News Corp Australia reported that the veteran five-eighth, who helped steer NSW to a State of Origin series win this year, would pull the pin on his final year at the Panthers.

The 33 year-old is said to be signing with the France-based Catalans Dragons for three years.

A veteran of 14 games for the Blues and three Tests for Australia, the pivot has won grand finals with Sydney Roosters and Cronulla.

He hinted at a possible move in a radio interview last weekend.

“Well they reckon the lifestyle’s outstanding over there (France),” Maloney told Triple M in Sydney.

It’s always been the goal to finish up with a stint over there (Super League) and we’ve always sort of thought, in terms of lifestyle, the south of France would be a little better than the north of England.

“Whether it happens immediately for next year or whether we’re looking at when the Penrith deal expires, it’s definitely on the radar.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It's a shame we couldn't have paired him with Hastings but we should probably be spending the money on the pack instead.

Leeds are paying for not putting in adequate plans to replace Maguire/Sinfield/Peacock - we should take note when talking about running lockers and Tommy another year
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

I don't much care what Leeds Rhinos do, but I wish our club had shown a bit more ambition here.
