Strong favourite emerges for St Helens job

Post by josie andrews » Fri Aug 09, 2019 6:40 am

Sydney Roosters assistant coach Adam O’Brien has emerged as the strong favourite to be named the new St Helens coach by Super League’s title sponsor, Betfred.

Odds have been slashed to 2/1 on O’Brien by the bookmaker as Saints step up their search for Justin Holbrook’s successor, with the current head coach set to depart at the end of the season to take the hotseat at Gold Coast Titans.

CEO Mike Rush is currently in Australia on the lookout for a new coach, with Saints keen to identify their next coach before this year’s Grand Final.

O’Brien joined the reigning World Champions from Melbourne ahead of the current season and has been described as an NRL coach in waiting. He started at Storm in 2007 as part of their under 20s coaching program and rose through the ranks to become assistant to Craig Bellamy.

Fellow Aussies Jason Demetriou, Shane Flanagan and David Fairleigh are all priced at 5/1, with Garth Brennan available at 10s.

Former Saints coach Daniel Anderson is another of the front-runners at 12/1 alongside the shortest-priced British coach, the current Saints assistant Richard Marshall.

And another "Strong Favourite" has emerged
Kristian Woolf now favourite to replace Justin Holbrook at Saints

TONGA national coach and Newcastle Knights assistant boss Kristian Woolf is currently ranked as favourite to take over from Justin Holbrook as Saints head coach at the end of the season.

Saints chief executive Mike Rush will have a shopping list of potential candidates - and will be keen to pull out another winner after seeing Holbrook transform the team's fortunes since 2017.

Given the good place the team will be left in, there will be no shortage of candidates looking to step up - and some may even see this as the route to a head coach's post back in the NRL.

The current odds from title sponsors Betfred, which are obviously changing all the time, list 44-year-old Woolf as favourite to take over as a the next permanent coach at 6/4.

He is followed by:

Adam O’Brien – 4/1.

Jason Demetriou – 6/1.

David Fairleigh – 7/1.

Shane Flanagan – 8/1.

Jason Ryles – 12/1.

Garth Brennan – 16/1.

Daniel Anderson – 16/1.

Richard Marshall – 20/1.

Geoff Toovey – 20/1.

Anthony Griffin – 25/1.

Paul McGregor – 33/1.

Neil Henry – 25/1.

Mal Meninga – 25/1.

Justin Morgan – 25/1.

Jason Taylor – 20/1.

Ian Watson – 25/1.

James Ford – 25/1.

Trent Barrett – 25/1

Paul Wellens – 25/1.

Dean Pay – 33/1.

Shaun Wane – 66/1.

Danny Ward – 40/1.

Brian McDermott – 50/1.

Tony Smith – 40/1.

Nathan Brown – 66/1.

Keiron Cunningham – 100/1.

Ian Millward – 100/1

I think Keiron Cunningham deserves another go, he wasn't given long enough last time.

Why would anyone go for an NRL assistant coach? Union specialist coaches at international level are where it’s at!
Rugby, Family and Strava... that’s about it for me to be honest!

What are the odds on Edwards to Saints? Can he sh*t on his legacy anymore than he has?
