Warrington Wolves have beaten off competition from rival clubs to clinch the signing of one of the most promising talents outside of Super League in Matty Ashton, who will join the club on a two-year deal from 2020.

The Wire have agreed an undisclosed transfer fee with Swinton Lions for the Betfred Championships top try-scorer, who has crossed for 23 tries in 22 games this year.

21-year-old Ashton is a product of the Rochdale Mayfield community club and can play at either fullback or on the wing. The pacey and elusive outside back also spent a successful 12 months playing in Australia for Mullumbimby Giants as part of his development.

Ahead of joining Warrington next year, Ashton commented: “It’s a dream come true to be able to get the chance to play full-time Rugby League. Warrington is a massive club and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity. I’m looking forward to building myself up both as a player and as a person. I can’t wait to get stuck into training and meet the lads.”

Head coach Steve Price added: “Matty has been a consistent player throughout his first year in the Championship. He’s certainly got some wheels on him and knows his way to the try line.

“He’s a great young player with a lot of potential but he still has a lot to learn about the game. We’re confident we can turn him into a quality Super League player.”
