Warrington Wolves Challenge Cup Final injury update

Post by josie andrews »

STEVE Price the chances of all four of his Challenge Cup Final injury doubts are “looking positive.”

Blake Austin (ankle), Jack Hughes (ruptured testicle), Josh Charnley (knee) were already doubts for the clash with St Helens at Wembley Stadium and they were joined by full-back Stefan Ratchford, who suffered a lower leg injury in the defeat to Wigan on Friday.

While not giving too much away, Price appeared optimistic about the chances of all four and said he will give them up until Friday’s captain’s run to prove their fitness.

“With Blake Austin, Jack Hughes and Josh Charnley, I’ll give them until the later stages of the week,” he said.

“Official training starts tomorrow so until then, there isn’t really too much to say but it’s looking positive.

“Stef copped a couple of knocks in the game the other night but I’m confident he’ll be right.

"If they’re not right for captain’s run, we’ll have to look at other options.”

Saints prop to miss Challenge Cup Final

St Helens prop Matty Lees will miss this Saturday’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

The 21-year-old picked up a serious abdominal injury in Friday night’s win over Leeds Rhinos and will now miss Saturday’s clash with Warrington.

It will be a big blow to both Justin Holbrook’s squad and the youngster, who has been almost ever-present this season, making 27 appearances.

While Lees will miss out, there are no other injury concerns for Saints, with Holbrook otherwise having a fully fit squad to choose from.

In Lees’ absence, Alex Walmsley and Luke Thompson will likely take the starting prop roles, with Kyle Amor and Jack Ashworth on the bench.

That's tough on Saints, losing a superstar like Lees, and having no-one to replace except nobodies like Walmsley and Thompson.

Is this where the excuses start as the season reaches its finale?

Austin misses out on Wolves’ Wembley squad

Blake Austin has NOT been named in Warrington’s 19-man squad for the Challenge Cup Final.

The halfback, Warrington’s star player and a contender for the Man of Steel trophy, picked up an ankle injury in the club’s recent defeat to Catalans, which has left him a doubt for Saturday’s Wembley showpiece.

TotalRL understands Austin has suffered a sindesmosis injury which has left him as a huge doubt for Saturday’s final.

Clubs have frequently changed their squads this year, picking players not initially in their 19-man squad. Warrington did it in the semi-final, selecting Stefan Ratchford despite not initially being named.

Josh Charnley and Jack Hughes have both been named after their recent injury struggles.

As for Saints, the likes of Lachlan Coote and Alex Walmsley have been named after spells on the sideline.

England forward Walmsley hasn’t played since the club’s semi-final win over Halifax due to an eye injury, while Coote has been nursing a knee problem.

But both are in line to feature for Saints in Saturday’s showpiece event.

Wolves: Akauola, Charnley, D Clark, J Clark, Cooper, Currie, Davis, Goodwin, Hill, Hughes, King, Lineham, Livett, Mamo, Murdoch-Masila, Patton, Philbin, Ratchford, Westwood.

Saints: Lomax, Makinson, Naiqama, Percival, Grace, Fages, Richardson, Walmsley, Roby, Thompson, Taia, Paulo, McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Knowles, Amor, Peyroux, Ashworth, Bentley, Coote.
