Newcastle Knights coach Nathan Brown to leave at season’s end

Post by josie andrews »

Newcastle will part ways with coach Nathan Brown at the end of the current season.

The news broke on Tuesday afternoon, hours after the coach reportedly told his players he was walking away from the gig.

Brown was signed to a unique performance-based contract last year, which had no set term assigned to it and allowed both parties a quick get-out if it came to that. It means the club isn’t obliged to offer any big payout to the coach.

The Daily Telegraph reports Brown met with Newcastle hierarchy on Monday night where the decision was mutually made.

The heat has been on Brown after many pundits tipped the Knights to break a finals drought this year.

They can still technically make the top eight, but currently sit in 10th place with nine wins from 20 games in 2019.

Brown has been feeling the pressure and recently released star recruit Jesse Ramien immediately after reports of a falling out between the pair.

He took the reins in 2016 and the team won two consecutive wooden spoons before finishing 11th in 2018.

Overall Brown has coached 93 games at the club for just 24 wins and 68 losses.

His win percentage of 25.8 is the lowest of any Newcastle coach in history, although it’s accepted Brown adopted a weak roster.

He had previously coached 151 at St George Illawarra for 80 games.

Can't see Saints reappointing him, be surprised if that happened.

Price and Wane in frame for Newcastle Knights job

Warrington Wolves coach Steve Price and former Wigan boss Shaun Wane are believed to be among the names shortlisted for the vacant Newcastle Knights head coaching job.

It was confirmed overnight that current Knights coach Nathan Brown will part ways with the club at the end of the season – an announcement very few were expecting.

There have since been a number of potential candidates that have emerged, with Fox Sports listing 12 possible replacements.

Among them are Price and Wane, as well as former Hull KR head coach Tim Sheens, former Catalans boss Kevin Walters and ex-Super League players Trent Barrett, Craig Fitzgibbon and Jason Ryles.

Other names being thrown into the ring include Anthony Griffin, Garth Brennan, Shane Flanagan and rumoured St Helens targets Adam O’Brien and Kristian Woolf.

An announcement confirming the new head coach isn’t expected for some time yet, however it would be a huge blow to the Wolves should Price prove to be the number one target.

yeah exactly, and as soon as the NRL came knocking, he was off, for family reasons if I remember correctly - can't imagine they'd want any repeat. Of course, that left them with the coaching maestro, god Cunningham !
Also bit of a false Gf win against 12 men for virtually 80 mins !!

He seems to me like a bloke who is more highly regarded in the NRL than he was in SL.
Funny old business, though, especially after just watching the Knights' abject surrender to Wests. Benji Marshall had a field day!

Former Wigan Warriors boss Wane to miss out on Newcastle Knights post

Shaun Wane looks set to miss out on the vacant position at NRL side Newcastle Knights.

They are expected to confirm Sydney Roosters assistant Adam O'Brien as successor to Nathan Brown, who has today departed the club days after it was announced he would leave this season.

Wane, a three-time Grand Final winner with Wigan, is currently working part-time as high performance director with the Scotland RU.

But when the Knights vacancy emerged last week he admitted he would like a crack at the NRL.

"I'd very much like to get an opportunity to test myself as a head coach in the NRL," he said. "I've had success in Super League, now I want to transfer that to the NRL."
