Garry Schofield has issued a public apology after receiving heavy criticism on social media on Friday evening.

The controversial rugby league columnist was branded ‘disgraceful’ by Jamie Peacock after tweeting about the quality of the Women’s Super League Grand Final.

Leeds Rhinos took on Castleford Tigers in the showpiece event, with the Rhinos taking the spoils with a 20-12 win to complete a domestic double.

However, Schofield, who represented Hull FC and Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain in his time as a player, wasn’t impressed with the quality of rugby league on show and took to Twitter, comparing the standard to an under-11s game.

He has since deleted the tweet after a backlash, and former Hull KR forward Peacock was one of the most high profile names to condemn the comment.

“ Wow… I think this is a new low even for you… disgraceful,” he wrote back to Schofield online.

“The more women and girls playing our great sport the better.”

As such, Schofield has taken to Twitter this morning to apologise, describing his comment as crass.

“Ok I got things wrong with my tweet last night about the ladies Grand Final,” he said.

“I did think the first half was very poor, especially compared to what I’ve seen in the past but the comparison I made was crass, so my apologies to all the players involved.”
