Premiership football and Sky

Post by ian.birchall »

See in today's DT that all these hard up Premiership football clubs are faced with returning £725 million if they cannot get their season going again.
Tempted to say shame but does this mean Sky demanding money back from Superleague. The game is up the proverbial gum tree if that is the case.

Its a lot worse than that. A lot worse.

Overseas TV rights are much bigger than SKY TV here for the PL. The losses could be billions. Quite Ironic some wanting the season null and void to stop Liverpool winning the league will bankrupt their own clubs especially Man U fans. Glazers are rich as a family they do not have the financial muscle that FSG who owns Liverpool do (Rich people around 17 or more are invested in the group including Le Bron James).

Man U have a debt of 400 million and more its rising this season even before coronavirus. LFC are now in profit for the 1st time in over 30 years or more. Problem in the game is clubs spend the money before the TV contracts end. Everton were a big example of this they would get a massive chunk and spend it and no thought of if things go wrong. Get less over the next 2 years or so. A lot of teams did this.

PL will still make money in the UK even if no fans attend the TV deals are that big. Bournemouth 12k stadium yet get to the PL and do okish. The worry for football is not the PL I do think the season will be played out behind closed doors its the lower and semi pro leagues I think they are finished as a structure. Over half will go to the wall if fans do not attend as their income is fan based with a small tv deal.

There are a few big teams in over their heads atm and I see 1 or 2 PL teams doing a Leeds United and really struggle. Spurs especially as the new stadium has to be paid for and if NFL games are cancelled then they will lose 10 of millions on that.

Football money has been found out today as has most sports who run on cash in hand and hand it over asap. SKY could be in real trouble if subscriptions are cancelled on mass for Sports. This is now a vicious circle that could affect all sports on paid tv world wide. That would also see the value of tv contracts collapse and money in sports dry up with massive overheads to pay out.

Read a report that up to 2018 NRL had a kitty of 32 million Aus. dollars as an emergency fund but they all took a piece of the pie home. Bet they wish they had not. And last point if Sky is in trouble RL is dead as will RU if BT need to recoup losses.
