Six Hull Players Test Positive for Covid 19

Post by Shaun1967 »

Super League has been thrown into chaos after six Hull FC players, five of whom played against Salford on Sunday, tested positive for Covid-19.

Two members of the coaching team have also returned positive results in tests that took place the day after the game.

A further player will be retested after an inconclusive result.

Both clubs have been told to cancel training over the next few days with those who have tested positive being forced to quarantine until 21 August.

The results of Salford's tests have not yet been returned.

The RFL is set to analyse Sunday's game to determine how many players will now be required to self-isolate as a result of prolonged contacts with the infected players, as part of procedures agreed with Public Health England.

Scrums have been eradicated from the game for the rest of this season to reduce the number of hot-spot contamination risks on the field. But tackles involving at least two defenders are considered a risk. Any player involved in lengthy contact in a tackle with a player who has tested positive will have to self-isolate.

The news is a bombshell in only the second week of the Super League's return from lockdown. It puts Hull's game against Castleford next Sunday in doubt, as well as Salford's match with Catalans Dragons on Saturday.

Both matches were due to be played as part of a full round of fixtures behind closed doors at St Helens.

The Challenge Cup tie between Hull and Castelford, set to be shown on BBC One the following weekend, is also now in doubt. The RFL says it will make an announcement on those fixtures as soon as possible.

A rapidly developing story. It now seems that the six Hull players are self isolating but at present, the rest of the squad are able to play at the weekend but all of the Salford squad are having to self isolate and they can't play at the weekend. I think they're are implying that the covid positive Hull players came into closer contact with some of the Salford squad (tackling?) than they did with the rest of their own squad. I'm not sure how much worse it would have to get before the season will be postponed/cancelled.

Interesting that the RFU have already stated (before their season starts) that any team unable to field a squad due to covid breaches will forfeit the game. The Scottish football association seem to be just postponing games at present. Do the RFL have any plans in place for this kind of problem or will they be making it up as we go along?

Problem is with that approach you make the league winners questionable because there maybe cases of teams not being able to field dropping lots of points. In which case what is the point of running the season apart from to keep the ££ ticking over

Covid breach in the sense of players breaking the rules? Or Covid breach in the sense of players testing positive? The two are very different.

The cases in Scottish Football with Aberdeen and Celtic are clear breaches of Government / Scottish FA rules.

At the moment with regards to Hull FC we are unsure whether the players have broken the rules or they have just been unlucky.

i think it comes down to the point you made in the earlier response.

if there is a clear breache of agreed protocol or lockdown rules, then why should the club who havent controlled their players not face some form of sanction. I stand to be corrected on this, but were 6 or 7 of the Aberdeen team out in the pub where there was the outbreak. If so, they are professional sportsmen and should be applying common sense at the minute. i dont for one minute think that they shouldnt be allowed out for a drink, but given current circumstances, they should be thinking otherwise.

if the players and club have followed all protocols / lockdown rules, then common sense must prevail and as appears to be the case at the minute with Hull FC, the players are isolated along with the Salford team until testing completed, and the fixtures have been amended accordingly. Should the situation change and be similar to Aberdeen, then i would be looking that Hull FC lose the game, whoever they should have played are awarded the win

the challenge for the governing bodies is if this happens on a regular basis, how many times can they re-arrange the fixture list, before they run out of options?

It didn’t help that they SL and the RFL arrogantly gave themselves no wiggle room at the end of the season to allow for this sort of thing to happen or are we expecting hull/Salford now to play 3 or 4 games in a matter of days?

According to Hull one of the players daughter's became ill and he took her to hospital. They think this may be how the virus got into the team bubble. Interesting that the players involved have not been named.
