When they’ve played professional RL for 10 years. Instead of 10 years for the one club as it used to be!

It used to be that the award of a testimonial was an acknowledgement and reward for ten years service to one particular club. This has now been extended to a small, but select group of players, whose exceptional contribution to the game, via one of three avenues. Those who feel they qualify through one of these are then required to submit an application to the RFL, under whose jurisdiction the scheme operates.

Suppose that is better than the old system whereby, if your face fits then you got a testimonial.

Steve Hampson comes to mind. He got shunted off just before one was due after ten years brilliant service.

But he got his revenge when he played for Salford!

Top lad Hampo, I think the way the club treated him left a sour taste in many mouths. Mind you, the club’s ruthlessness at that time kept us top of the pile, we could do with a little of that now ☹️
