Talks take place as Super League considers 2020 structure change

Post by josie andrews »

The change would see an extended play-off campaign

The 2020 regular Super League season could be set to come to an end this weekend as the competition considers ambitious changes to keep things interesting.

As reported by Total Rugby League on Sunday evening, Hull Live understands talks have taken place which would dramatically alter the format of the competition heading into November.

The notion is still at an early stage, with talks to continue later this week before any decision is made regarding the final four weeks of the campaign.

Changes would include bringing the season to an end this weekend after a stacked round which features the Hull and St Helens-Wigan derby and introducing a larger play-off competition, including up to eight teams.

At present, the plan is for the top four clubs to progress into the play-offs after the completion of the regular season, with semi-finals being played in order to decide who will feature in the Grand Final at the KCOM Stadium and the end of November.

However, the new proposal, which it is believed several clubs are behind, would ensure every game in November has significance.

With no relegation, clubs at the bottom end of the Super League currently have little to play for, a change at this late stage of the season would see interest levels rise with the potential for more clubs being involved in a four-week long play-off process.

As mentioned, any alteration is far from being formalised and not all teams are behind the idea but it will be discussed in the coming days.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Leeds stand a good chance of not getting in the top 4 then?

That's crazy. So the complaint is, under the current set-up we may not be able to complete all, or enough, of the fixtures?

So we'll overcome that by stopping the season now, but having more future matches in the play-offs??

If you look at the fine print it says that if we still cannot complete the games under the new system the final standings will be decided by a round of props in bikinis and then evening gowns.

Nothing wrong with that! May be why we extended Clubby's contract?

If the present system is deemed not interesting enough why did they adopt it in the first place ? .
As Moto says more fixtures means more headaches in fulfilling fixtures . If these play off fixtures are to mean more knock out games we will be in a position of teams going through by default if Covid claims more teams .

In the current climate, 'interesting' shouldn't be the main criterion. Not over 'fair' and 'consistent', anyway.
