Warrington awarded 24-0 victory over Salford

Post by josie andrews »

Warrington have been awarded a 24-0 victory over Salford after the Red Devils informed Super League and the RFL that they are unable to fulfil Friday’s Super League fixture.

The win has been awarded to the Wolves under competition rules governing forfeited fixtures, with the matter referred to the RFL’s Compliance Department for further consideration.

A Salford statement reads: “This match would have been the team’s third of a congested schedule, which was set to see the Red Devils play four times within the space of 11 days.

“Salford Red Devils informed Super League and the RFL that only 13 players are available for selection. This includes two recent loan signings and two players promoted from the academy, who were brought into the squad in order to assist in the fulfilment of fixtures.”

In the meantime, Super League are continuing to explore fixture rescheduling options in light of today’s announcements, with Huddersfield’s match against Castleford on Friday also postponed.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Why a 24 - 0 forfeit?

24-0 is standard RL forfeit score, interestingly RL made the headline story on BBC 24 sports section.....I'm still waiting for a Bevan French try from last week - so far, no mention

I didn't realise it was April the 1st already.

Of course it’s Covid related , we wouldn’t have this fixture pile up if it want for Covid . The powers that be are Loopy.

How bad would it be if this decided a playoff place or even top spot

Given the circumstances I would like to have seen this fixture treated as a covid related postponement rather than throwing the towel in. The likelihood is that some of the postponed games will never take place and their points will be cancelled not redistributed. It would be better if position was decided on games played rather than forfeited games especially as some teams have been disadvantaged by trying to get a team out.

Only in rugby league could a team be awarded the win, then have a game moved forward so they can achieve 2 wins in the same game, it’s moronic

I think it's part of the new "Covid" regulations that if a team pulls out, another team, not scheduled to play that weekend, is on standby to fill in ? Of course, Sky would have an influence because suddenly they are a game down within their 'Live' schedule with nothing to show.
So credit to us tonight, getting the win under intense pressure, when we could have dropped to 3rd in the table.
Regarding Salford, forfeiture is in the rules if you fail to compete in an arranged SL fixture - and it's their fault they don't have either an Academy or Reserve grade ! You can't just pull out of a game, being in SL you have commitments to the Competition, although you can have sympathy for them.
