Super League future set to be secured as Sky Sports agree new broadcasting deal

Post by josie andrews »

The Daily Mail are reporting a deal is done

The Super League look set to agree a new three-year broadcasting agreement with Sky Sports.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim Sky have seen off competition from rivals BT Sport for the rights to show the Super League until the end of the 2024 season.

The current TV contract runs out at the end of next season and many within the sport were sweating on a new deal with the global pandemic having huge knock-on effects financially.

However, it seems a deal with Sky will be agreed on and completed next month at the next Super League shareholders meeting, but unfortunately it seems the amount TV money injected into the sport will be reduced.

The report claims the deal, which does secure the future of rugby league in this country given it is club’s chief source of income, will not be worth as much as the current £40m-a-year.

that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Another worrying factor if the income from Sky is reduced.

Robert Elstone was on BBC R5 Sports extra at Half time during one of the recent games

all he would say in regards to TV was that they are speaking to several interested parties, and wouldnt be drawn any further than that, and certainly wasnt giving any indication of who was in prime position.

what he did say though was that he believed that the clubs should be the ones to make the final decision as they are the key stakeholders. There was discussion around whether a unanimous or majority decision was required but cant remember if that was specifically about accepting the TV deal, probably based on selling out early at the last renewal

Doesn't make for good reading does it.

Other broadcasters included in the tender process yet the amount the deal is worth is going to be lower than the current deal. The opinion must be that there isn't much value in Rugby League.

Surely one of the key contributors to the deal is the number of viewing figures and forecast new joiners because of the Sport being aired.

Does it matter if the deal is reduced, as long as the money goes to SL only clubs, then surely they will get more than when the fat controller decided to give it to everyone
