Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Challenge Cup - BBC contract extension

Post by the pieman »

Just had an email from the RFL confirming contract with BBC extended

"We are delighted to announce that a new three-year enhanced extension with the BBC has been agreed to extend their coverage of the Challenge Cup until 2024. This means the same great coverage of the Cup will take place, with the BBC continuing to cover two matches from the Round of 16 onwards, as well as the ground breaking online and digital coverage of the early rounds of the competition featuring teams from all sections of the Community Game. The new deal will commence from 2022 as Rugby League and the BBC celebrate 70 years since the first Challenge Cup Final was televised nationally; Workington Town’s 18-10 victory over Featherstone Rovers at Wembley in 1952.

i've criticised the BBC previously mainly about lack of promotion / advertisement of the game, but their coverage has gotten a whole lot better than it used to be, with some modern and inciteful views on the game.

BBC wanted to drop the Challenge Cup a few years back it was pressure from the Rugby League MP's section in Parliament that it is still going .They insisted that Rugby League Challenge cup was a mainstream sport exported all over the world .

One of the better aspects of Covid was less Hunter-Paul running on the pitch every five minutes

Is there any information about how much they're paying and how it compares with the previous deal?

And don't they sell on some games to Sky?

In general the BBC give better coverage of RL than anyone else, via local radio, TV and website. The British press coverage in general is pathetic.

There was nothing in the original article or this off the BBC website. It does sound like the world cup is going to heavily feature including ladies and wheelchair RL, which is fantastic for the sport from an exposure perspective
