Trent Robinson to join France rugby league setup - new head coach revealed

Post by josie andrews »

Laurent Frayssinous will coach France at the World Cup.

Laurent Frayssinous will lead France into the World Cup after being appointed as their new head coach.

The former Catalans head coach will be supported by Trent Robinson, the Sydney Roosters head coach who has been appointed as director of rugby in a restructure at the top of the national team's coaching team, according the L'Indepedant.

Frayssinous replaces Aurélien Cologni as the head coach, with Cologni now to focus on his role with Elite 1 side Lezignan. Frayssinous is without a job after agreeing to coach Ottawa Aces, the newly formed Canadian club which was due to enter League 1 this year. However, their involvement was deferred due to the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19.

The 43-year-old took charge of Catalans ahead of the 2013 season, replacing Robinson to become the Dragons' first-ever French coach.

He spent almost five seasons with Les Dracs before his dismissal midway through the 2017 season.

It's understood that officials are trying to organise a game for the international weekend in June this year, which will act as their warm-up game ahead of the World Cup. France will face England, Samoa and Greece in the group stages of the competition at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Robinson's involvement is understood to be wide-ranging, with a view to developing the nation's structure and pathways in the long-term.

Robinson, a three-time NRL winning coach, is a known advocate of French rugby after his time in Perpignan.

Also joining the setup will be David Collado. The former French representative will act as team manager.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
