Rugby League Super League plans for fans return with special round as grounds to open up

Post by josie andrews »

Exclusive: Talks are taking place to switch more games to Monday May 17 to allow fans to watch games for the first time

Super League are drawing up plans to be the first sport to welcome spectators back into grounds with talks taking place which could see an entire round of fixtures moved to one day.

The government’s roadmap out of lockdown has identified Monday May 17 as the earliest sports clubs will be able to welcome fans back into stadiums, ending behind closed doors games.

From May 17 clubs can allow 10,000 fans or 25 per cent of the stadium capacity inside grounds as the first steps are taken to welcoming supporters back into live events.

Warrington Wolves’ Super League game with Huddersfield Giants has already been moved to Monday May 17 to accommodate the return of supporters. The round six clash was originally set for Thursday May 13.

Up to 4,000 fans will be inside the Halliwell Jones Stadium to watch that game, with Leigh Centurions also moving their fixture against Wigan Warriors to the same night.

Rugby League Live understands the Super League board are now holding talks with broadcast partners Sky Sports with regards to further switches with one possibility being the entire round six will take place on Monday May 17 to enable all games to be played in front of fans.

St Helens' home game with Salford Red Devils is likely to follow suit in the next few days, leaving discussions to be had over Leeds Rhinos v Wakefield Trinity, Hull FC v Catalans Dragons and Castleford Tigers v Hull KR.

The loss of revenue from playing behind closed doors has hit rugby league hard, with Super League recognising the need to have fans back in stadium as soon as possible. However, any switch would leave Sky Sports with a hole in their schedule for Thursday May 13 and Friday May 14 when two televised games would normally be played

It’s our understanding those talks are no being held with Sky Sports with regards the switch, which would be universally welcomed by clubs and fan alike.

There is also a possibility two games will remain in the current designated Thursday and Friday slots for Sky TV, with the remainder of games played in front of spectators on the Monday.

Details of how many supporters will be allowed at each game and how it is determined who will be able to attend are expected to be thrashed out in the coming weeks

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
