Toronto Wolfpack are back as 14-team North American Rugby League launches in June

Post by josie andrews »

The new competition kicks off in June this year

Toronto Wolfpack will return to the rugby league field in 2021, after they were confirmed as part of the new 14-team North America Rugby League, which kicks off in June.

The Wolfpack seemed certain to fold after being voted out of Super League last November, following what the club described as "overwhelming financial challenges" caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, they will now compete in a new league played across the United States and Canada, which Ottawa Aces and New York, who were both originally scheduled to join the Rugby Football League's domestic structure, also included.

The NARL will begin fixtures in Brooklyn and Las Vegas on the weekend of June 19 and 20, with teams from across the continent initially split into three conferences: Eastern, Western and Canada

The Canadian conference will feature the Wolfpack and Ottawa playing for the Canada Cup due to Covid-19 regulations, before they formally join the Eastern conference in 2022.

"I'm delighted to introduce the North America Rugby League to rugby league fans around the world in what we firmly believe is the next evolutionary step for rugby league," NARL chief operating officer Robert Curtis said.

"The NARL is the culmination of years of research and market testing, and has been designed to bring you the hardest-hitting, fastest and most exciting sport on the planet. Matches begin this summer. It's time to get excited about a new class of contact sport

Atlanta Rhinos, Boston Thirteens, Brooklyn Kings, Cleveland Rugby League, New York Rugby League and Washington Cavalry make up the teams in the Eastern conference, while the Western conference is comprised of Austin Armadillos, Las Vegas Blackjacks, Phoenix Venom, Portland Loggers, San Diego Swell and San Francisco Rush.

Throughout the competition's inaugural season, all games in each conference will be played in a single venue on the same day, with all matches streamed by the NARL's streaming partner, SportsFlick. "Our sole aim is to grow the fantastic sport of rugby league in North America and create a legacy for generations to come.” Curtis added

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Unfortunately, without the european angle they'll really struggle to gain any cut through into sports. Brooklyn are basically an amateur side of enthusiasts playing in a local park, no amount of spin is going to change that, only money will. I don't see how this can be funded.

SL has killed RL in north america IMO, and it's a huge own goal.
