Boyd Cordner poised to announce shock NRL retirement aged 29

Post by josie andrews »

Boyd Cordner is set to retire from rugby league with the Sydney Roosters, NSW Blues and Australia test captain expected to confirm he has played his last NRL game.

The Sydney Roosters have called a Monday morning press conference at the SCG, where Cordner will reportedly front the media.

Cordner has not played since copping a head knock in November's State of Origin series opener, the last in a long series of concussions the 29-year-old has suffered.

On that occasion he returned to the field after passing his HIA, but then withdrew from the remainder of the Origin series to seriously consider his future.

The backrower set his sights on a round-14 return after seven months out of the game but that comeback never eventuated.

Cordner's call will mark a cruel end to a decorated career.

One of the most reliable players in the game, he won premierships with the Roosters in 2013, 2018 and 2019.

He also led NSW to Origin series victories in 2018 and 2019, and had taken over as Kangaroos Test captain in 2018.

Cordner still had two years to run on his Roosters contract but will instead end with 181 games for the foundation club, 20 matches for the Kangaroos and 16 Origins for NSW.

It also comes as another brutal blow to the injury-hit Roosters.

They have already had Jake Friend (concussions) and Brett Morris (knee) retire this season, while representative stars Luke Keary and Lindsay Collins are out for the year.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
