Update on RFL’s quest for Challenge Cup final

Post by josie andrews »

The Rugby Football League is in talks with the government in an attempt to make the Challenge Cup Final a pilot event.

That comes after the decision was taken by the government to delay the final COVID-19 recovery step for at least a month due to a rise in cases.

Between 10 and 15 sporting and cultural events over the next month will be included in the government’s extended Events Research Programme (ERP), meaning they will be exempt from the strict capacity limits which came into force at step three of the road map on May 17.

England’s group games at Euro 2020 had already been granted ERP status and will continue to be played in front of crowds of 22,500 which is 25% capacity at Wembley. If successful, this is expected to go up to at least 50% capacity for one of the last-16 matches at Wembley, plus the semi-finals and final.

The All England Championships at Wimbledon, which start on June 28, and Formula One’s British Grand Prix over the weekend of July 16-18 are two of the other major sporting events understood to be under consideration for test event status.

Fingers crossed then that rugby league will receive the same dispensation as football and other major sporting events.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
