TONGAN HALFBACK JOINS SALFORD’S RANKS

Post by josie andrews »

Salford Red Devils are pleased to announce the signing of Tongan halfback Ata Hingano until the end of the season, with the option to extend for a further two years.

Hingano, who is awaiting visa clearance before he can pull the Red Devils shirt on, is joining from Queensland rugby league outfit Mackay Cutters and can also play at stand-off.

The 24-year-old has also played in the NRL for the New Zealand Warriors and the Canberra Raiders and has represented Tonga eight times at international level, starting every game of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup at halfback for his country.

Hingano will linkup with Tui Lolohea once again, who he has played with during his time at New Zealand Warriors and at international level for Tonga.

Speaking on the addition of Hingano, head coach Richard Marshall said: “Ata is a brilliant addition to the squad and I’m happy to now have everything over the line regarding the signing.

“Having competed at an elite level over in the NRL and for his country, Ata promises to be an exciting player who despite still being quite young, will provide a good level of experience and knowledge.

“We’re looking forward to working with Ata. He’s a great organiser and kicker and he’ll compliment our existing halfbacks. He’s also quite young so still has time to grow and develop.”

Director of rugby and operations Ian Blease said: “I am really pleased that we have secured Ata’s signature for the rest of the season with an option for the following two years. It has been a long process seeking out a quality player, but we are there now.

“Ata will add class, determination and organisation and will give some fresh options for the head coach and for our team going forward.

“With our injury list not improving for some weeks yet, it is important that we show our supporters and sponsors that we are determined to compete at the highest level and Ata’s signing and pedigree gives us that new player injection which I’m really excited about.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Who has got it right, Salford with their attitude, or Wigan with theirs. At least the’ve signed someone and have a positive attitude for the future unlike Wigan who treat fans like mushrooms and are pessimistic and full of excuses about not signing people.

I remember him coming through at the NZW; he was going to be The Next Big Thing (much like Reece Walsh), but it didn't really happen for him.

Apart from some fans in rumour threads when have wigan said they don't wish to compete they haven't and we haven't not been competing yet
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Do you honestly think they have been competing in the transfer market. We couldn’t sign Mulhern, Williams, and have lost the second best prop ( after Singleton ) at the club for next season. Results this season have shown a lot more wins than losses but when we face stiffer opposition we came up short. Granted those teams will beat most but we were nowhere near and nothing looks like changing soon. Costs are being cut for obvious reasons and thankfully no one expects me to put the odd million or two l have lying about into the club so it is inevitable we will loose some competitiveness at this time. The bright spot on the horizon is it will pay off in the long term by leaving a viable club. We may also pick up some reasonable signings from Warrington as they are creating mayhem amongst their players apparently. I would rather be where we are than in their position. It’s just all doom and gloom and nothing positive coming out of the club to give us some hope that they have a plan. I feel like they think the fans will always be there and don’t need any reassurances that they are needed , they will just be there. When things get sticky it’s nice to feel wanted and appreciated . Competitiveness is off the field as well as on it, the club have to compete for our free time and support
