George Williams' Warrington Wolves debut delayed after Covid-19 outbreak

Post by josie andrews »

The England halfback will have to wait a little longer for his Warrington debut.

George Williams' debut for Warrington Wolves has been delayed with his new club's trip to Leigh Centurions on Thursday having been called off because of another Super League Covid outbreak.

The England star's move to the Halliwell Jones Stadium was announced earlier this month following his release from Canberra Raiders due to homesickness.

Williams turned down interest from his former club Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos to accept a big-money move to Warrington on a three-and-a-half year deal.

The 26-year-old was a free agent after his departure from the Raiders, where he played 32 games and scored 10 tries in the National Rugby League.

Williams, who made his Great Britain debut in 2019, joined the Raiders from hometown club Wigan, where he scored 68 tries in 178 appearances.

It was hoped he would make his bow for the Wolves at bottom club Leigh on Thursday night but the game will now not go ahead due to positive cases in the Wire camp.

An RFL statement read: "Warrington, who have a number of players still unavailable following positive Covid tests which led to the postponement of their last fixture against Hull KR scheduled for July 11, had a further positive test today which takes them to a total of nine players ruled out, one of whom is a close contact and therefore also required to isolate.

"The Covid Fixture Protocols state that a club can apply for a postponement if they have seven or more of their 25 best-paid players ruled out as a result of Covid-19.

"The clubs will now liaise with the RFL about a possible rearrangement of the fixture - although the Betfred Super League table will again be determined by win points percentage to allow for the possibility of not all fixtures being fulfilled."

That means Williams’ Warrington debut could come at home to Wigan in a mouthwatering encounter next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Castleford’s trip to Catalans on Saturday is also in huge doubt due to three positive Covid cases in the Tigers’ camp.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Surely they'd want to play and tonk leigh and then miss the wigan game, if they were concerned about cheating their points percentage - unless you think they think Wigan are an easier team to run up a score against?

Well 100% there fullback isn't isolating and has.other players visiting so it's not wonder it spreading.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.
