Castleford Tigers' Covid-19 outbreak - what it means for their upcoming fixtures

Post by josie andrews »

The Tigers are set for an extended period off the field.

Castleford Tigers' Covid crisis means they will be forced to call off at least two matches before they return to the field.

Rugby League Live can reveal that the number of positive cases at the Tigers has now reached double figures, with at least eight of their players testing positive for the virus.

As a result, they will all have to follow the RFL's return to play protocols which means they cannot play for 17 days, which takes them to Friday, August 6th, the day the club is currently due to play Leeds Rhinos.

With numerous other players on track and trace having to isolate for ten days too, Castleford will be over the threshold of seven Covid-related absentees until they face Leeds Rhinos two weeks on Friday.

The game with Catalans Dragons on Saturday has already been postponed and their game with Leigh Centurions next Thursday is almost certainly due to be off as the Tigers will be unable to raise a team.

The players isolating due to track and trace will be available for the match against Huddersfield on Monday, August 2nd, but those who have tested positive will be unable to play at that stage, with protocols allowing them to train but not play. Given Castleford will still have eight players out, they are entitled to call that game off too should they wish to do so.

They will all be available for the game against the Rhinos later that week, subject to passing protocols. As it stands, the West Yorkshire derby appears the most likely date the Tigers will return to the field.

Of course, that's all subject to no further positive cases being recorded in the coming days, which would result in further issues for the club.

The Tigers have currently played as many games as any other side in the competition and are only four games short of reaching the threshold that will make them eligible for the play-offs.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
